Symptoms of Endometriosis
Endometriosis is one of the most terrifying diseases that can afflict a woman during her childbearing years. If left unchecked, this disease can cause infertility as well as a number of other health complications.
Endometriosis is a non-cancerous disease that is related to menstruation. The endometrium or the lining of the uterus thickens and sheds through the vagina when a woman has her menstrual period every month.
In endometriosis, however, the endometrium tends to develop outside the uterus and is connected to or implanted in other body tissues.
This disease most commonly affects the fallopian tubes, the vagina, ovaries and the uterine wall. The endometrial tissue is also found in surgical scars, skin, lungs, intestines, kidney and bladder. Only the spleen is one organ where this tissue is not found.
When a woman is struck by endometriosis the tissue outside the uterus is nourished by the hormone estrogen and sheds during menstruation in the absence of conception.
But the bloody rubble formed by the breakdown of this tissue cannot be expelled from the body through the vagina owing to its misplaced location outside the uterus and mounts up in the tissues in which it has grown to be blocked.
This causes the area to become inflamed and results in a great deal of irritation before and after menstruation. If left untreated, the outcome of bleeding may be the development of scar tissue that can extend through the pelvis and attach other organs to each other, thereby hindering their proper functioning and filling the entire space and eventually producing a tumor-like mass.
Endometriosis is known to manifest itself in the form of pain during sexual intercourse, chronic pelvic pain and long standing infertility. The pain tends to increase as menstruation approaches and may even linger on after it ends. The pain and symptoms often vary from woman to woman and also depend on the site where the dislocated endometrial tissue is present.
Most women suffering from this disease experience a deep seated pain in the area beneath the navel, thighs and hips. Other symptoms of this disease include tenderness of the abdomen, painful bowel movements, particularly during menstruation and diarrhea.
