Rheumatoid Arthritis is a disease of joints. In this disease there is a persistent inflammation of joints and tissues near joints. The inflammation can spread to other organs of body as well. Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease.
Autoimmune diseases are illnesses caused by the mistaken attack by their own immune system on the other cells of body. The immune system is a complex organization of cells and antibodies. They search and destroy any infection or alien body in our system.
But in the case of the antibodies present in our system attack the tissues of own body; hence they can affect many organs. Thus this disease is also called a systematic disease.
The actual cause of rheumatoid arthritis is not known till date. There are many ideas suspecting different viruses, bacteria, and fungi, but no study or research has proved to be fruitful regarding this matter. There is a worldwide active research being done on the cause of rheumatoid arthritis.
It is also believe to be genetically inherited. It is being suspected that our genes make us more prone to this disease due to inheritance. There is another belief that certain infections or factors in the environment might activate our immune system in such a way that they start attacking own body tissues.
The immune system me be misdirected by certain indigenous or external factors. But till date it is not clear that which factors cause Rheumatoid Arthritis. This mistaken attack by immune system results in inflammation in the joints and sometimes in various organs of the body. They can even affect the lungs or eyes.
The symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis come and go as disease becomes active and passive frequently. When disease is active then the most common symptoms are tiredness, lack of energy, joint pains, stiffness in muscles and lack of appetite.
The pain of joints and muscles are higher in degree in the morning as we get active after being inactive for hours. There is inflammation in the tissues of the linings under joints. This causes formation of more joint fluid. Hence joints become red, swollen, painful and tender.
The inflammation is symmetric that is it affects both side of the body. It can cause dryness of mouth and eyes. It also can cause breathing problems and chest pain. Small joints of hands and feet are also involved in the process. It becomes difficult to do even easy works of daily living.
