The Paleolithic Diet- From Past To Present

The Paleolithic diet is one of the most wholesome and nutritious diets that might be hard to follow in the modern era but is certainly the best diet for initiating weight loss and keeping fit. This diet was first brought in the limelight by Dr Walter L Voegtlin, a gastroenterologist in the 1970s and has gained immense popularity among dietitians and nutritionists worldwide.

Also known as the paleo diet or the caveman’s diet, it is based on the dietary principles and eating habits of our hunter-gatherer ancestors or the early man belonging to the Paleolithic age, before the agrarian society came into existence. This diet dates back millions of years and is the secret to human evolution.

The Paleo diet is great for meat lovers and helps you cut down on all those unwanted calories. Scientific research on this diet revealed that our Paleolithic ancestors were food gatherers and hunters. They consumed an array of game dishes and gathered seasonal nuts, fruits and vegetables as they were nomads and did not cultivate any crops.

Almost two-thirds of their daily caloric requirements came from animal sources, yet they hardly complained about chronic ailments such as arthritis, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression or cancer. They were healthy and life expectancy was high.

The Paleolithic diet overview:
The Paleolithic diet, consumed ages ago by the stone man is one of the best diets that can be adopted in contemporary times to ward off the evils of various lifestyle diseases and get back in shape. It is enriched with the goodness of all the major nutrients required by the body for proper growth and development such as vitamins and minerals, carbohydrates, fats, proteins and antioxidants.

Modern day research tells us that this diet is coded for our genes and constitutes natural foods that promote longevity and were designed by nature to be consumed by human beings and eliminates all the artificial foods from the platter. This diet naturally aids the process of detoxification and combats various illnesses with ease.

What we need to understand is that our ancestors thrived on fish, fowl, meat and fresh fruits and vegetables and lived for much longer than we do. Most modern foods such as grains, cereals, potatoes and other cultivated vegetables might provide the much needed calories but in their raw state they are full of toxins and cannot be consumed directly.

The Paleolithic diet essentials:
The Paleo diet primarily comprises of fish, meat, seafood, eggs, fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts such as almonds, Brazilian nuts etc, berries, seeds, insects, herbs and mushrooms. Lean red meat is high in proteins and omega 3 fatty acids and is a great source of nutrition. All types of junk food, fermented, processed and preserved foods are eliminated from this diet.

White flour products, white sugar, refined cereals, salt, alcohol and saturated oils are prohibited. If you are on a Paleo diet you will have to avoid rice, pastas, noodles, groundnuts, cashew nuts, potatoes, beans and dairy products. Increase your intake of water and fruit juices and take herbal tea in moderation.

Benefits of a Paleo diet:
This diet is not only well balanced and nutritious but is also great for combating an array of diseases. It certainly aces the list of diets when it comes to shedding those extra pounds of fat resting on your body and decreases the toxicity level of your body. The only obstacle that lies in following this diet is that you have to adapt yourself to it and make it a way of life. This would mean giving up all types of artificial foods that most of us in this modern era are so used to.
