Treat your Graves Disease

Graves Disease is an autoimmune disorder. Due to this disease, thyroid gland becomes over active. In autoimmune disorder our immune system, which is supposed to protect our body from foreign diseases but it mistakenly attacks our body and starts damaging our body cells.Graves Disease is more prevalent in women than men. It is more seen from the age of 20 years to 40 years.

Causes of Graves Disease

In graves disease, our immune system produces one chemical called immunoglobulin, which after stimulating thyroid makes it more active than usual. This state of thyroid gland is known as hypothyroidism

The main reason for Graves Disease is still not known. But is it assumed that this can be genetic disorder. It is said that more production of immunoglobulin can be the result of any outside environmental reason but it is aggravated due to the family history.

Symptoms of Graves Disease

Grave’s disease has few significant symptoms:

Goiter: It is the swollen part of the neck and due to this symptom thyroid gland bulges out.

Skin disease: It might cause skin problem like itchy skin, swollen lower legs or feet, thickening and darkening of the skin.

Eye problem: There are some symptoms like itchy eyes, sudden tears, blurred or double vision may persist. Otherwise tissues around the eyes become swollen and eyes appear more frightening.

Other symptoms of eyes are sweating, feeling hot all the time, increased heart rate, shortness of breath, tremors and shakes, frequent bowel movements, mood swings, nervousness, insomnia, muscle weakness, sudden weight loss etc.

Women might feel the irregularity with their menstrual problem. In older people, health disease becomes another concern

Diagnosis of Graves Disease

When doctor diagnoses this disease, he/she will go by symptoms. To check your eye problems, doctor might ask for scanning of eyes with the help of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT). Doctor will diagnose your heart problem with electrocardiogram (EKG) or any other cardiac test. Doctor will check any nodule in your thyroid gland with the help of stethoscope and it will diagnose any kind of abnormality in blood flow in the thyroid gland.

Treatment for Graves Disease

To treat Graves Disease, doctors might cure the symptoms first. Doctor might go for drugs like lorazepam (Ativan) or diazepam (Valium) to solve the problem of sleep disorder and anxiety. To cure tremor, palpitations, and nervousness, doctor may prescribe propanolol (Inderal).

To reduce the over production of immunoglobins, doctor may control thyroid with the help of radioactive iodine, surgery and certain anti-thyroid drugs. Anti-thyroid drugs involve propylthiouracil and methimazole (Tapazole, Thiamazole).

After going through radioactive iodine treatment and taking anti-thyroid drugs, most of the patients get a good health. Surgery in this case is very rare.
