Arthritis is a collection of conditions that engross deterioration of the body’s joints. This comprises rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, septic arthritis, gout, and pseudogout.
However, in its most familiar form it appears as osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis implies damaging of the cartilage in the affected joints as a consequence of which movements of the affected joint become enormously painful.
The causes of another form of arthritis, known as rheumatoid arthritis are not yet established. But basically some malfunctioning of the immune system is responsible for it. As a result healthy and necessary cells begin to deteriorate and get destroyed.
Whereas, Osteoarthritis is caused by extreme wear and tear of the cartilage of the joints. At times an external injury or an infection may damage the cartilage.
Treatment for Arthritis
Please understand that osteoarthritis can’t be cured but yes, it can certainly be treated. Treatment involves medication and calls for a few changes in your lifestyle. These two activities go along way to ease the pain associated with this disorder. The foremost feature of the changed lifestyle is your diet.
Here are a few tips:
Food and diet
Avoid fats and increase your intake of fruits and vegetables, preferably fresh and seasonal ones.
Don’t over eat. It is better to have more number of small meals than having fewer large meals.
Omega-3 fatty acids are helpful in controlling inflammation. As such, you should include fish and flaxseed in your daily diet.
Antioxidants are the other helpful agents to slow down the deterioration. Olive oil and soy are rich sources of these. So is red wine, but its intake should be restrictive and calculative.
Exercise
Having planned your diet you have to plan your exercise routine. Apart from helping you to shed weight, in case you are overweight, exercise contributes to the strengthening of muscles. That is helpful in keeping off some of the strain on the joints.
Exercises that are likely to give a jolt to the body must be avoided for fear of straining the joints. Instead go for long brisk walks or swimming.
Helpful Practices
Applying a warm compress at the beginning of the exercise followed by a cold compress at the end gives much needed relief from pain and inflammation. Even otherwise, application of compresses is helpful for immediate relief.
Incorporating the above changes in your daily life coupled with medication should surely give relief.
