Treating Cysts Of The Tailbone
The tailbone is located at the base of the spine or the backbone. Disorders associated with the tailbone include an external injury, infection, tumor or cyst, and the resultant pain. If you see a growth on this bone, well, it might be a cyst. Such a cyst should not be left untreated for obvious serious complications. A medical check is called for to diagnose the disorder and to prevent its reemergence.
Men are more prone to tailbone cysts than women. It appears as a small pit on the surface of the skin. It remains harmless till it gets infected and an abscess is formed. Loose hairs that manage to infiltrate the skin generally cause it. The body treats hair as an alien and generates a cyst around it.
Wearing of very tight dresses and the resultant skin friction could also prompt it. Continuous travel on a bicycle for long distances might facilitate the hair into the skin where it may continue to grow.
The other factors that may cause it include a laidback lifestyle or accompanied by obesity. Maintaining poor personal hygiene or having an unusually dense growth of hair is the other causes for this malady. An occupational or professional hazard that demands continued long hours of sitting on a chair is noted to be another reason for it.
At times even a ruptured hair follicle may cause this. As such, it would be a good precautionary measure to regularly, shave one’s buttocks and the area around the tailbone.
When the cysts become infected, abscesses build up in the cavity. At its initial stages a pilonidal cyst is red with swollen skin. Gradually, the cyst begins to fill with pus and thus starts the infection. The fluid that oozes out of the hole can vary from being clear, cloudy, or bloody. Infection is very easy to identify because of the foul odor. As the infection builds up, fever and nausea may occur. Invariably the neighboring area will be red, tender, and painful to touch.
Normally the treatment would require the use of antibiotics followed by surgical removal of the cyst after the infection has dried up.
