What are the common tests used to detect cerebral palsy?
Cerebral palsy can be diagnosed through certain clinical examinations. Some of these laboratory tests include:
• Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI); this examination provides high-quality images of the brain cells and indicates abnormalities
• A CT scan of the head
• A hearing test
• Visual testing
• Electroencephalography (EEG); this examination provides records of electrical activity along the scalp
• Blood tests to determine metabolic or hereditary conditions
What are the common treatments for cerebral palsy?
There is no specific treatment for cerebral palsy, but various therapies can help in overcoming the developmental disabilities associated with this disorder. In general, the sooner treatment begins the better chances are that the individual will lead a better life.
Treatment may include one or more of the following therapies: physical therapy; occupational therapy; orthopedic intervention; speech therapy; appropriate glasses and hearing aids to assist in communication and learning; medications to control seizures; special educational facilities.
Medications may include muscle relaxants to reduce tremors and spasticity, and anticonvulsants to control seizures. Medications such as benzodiazepienes, baclofen and intrathecal phenol/baclofen relax muscle spasms.
In some cases, surgery may also be required to correct anatomical abnormalities, release tight muscles; or correct joint contractures. Braces or other orthotic devices may also be needed or even feeding tubes to control gastroesophageal reflux.
What are the complications associated with cerebral palsy?
The following complications are associated with cerebral palsy: Seizures, Injuries from falls, a decrease in mobility, reduced communication skills, reduced intellectual abilities and Social stigmatization
How can cerebral palsy be prevented?
Cerebral palsy is a lifelong disorder. Hence, long-term care is necessary. The disorder does not affect anticipated lifespan duration. The extent of disability varies from case to case. In most cases, the injury causing cerebral palsy may have unavoidable. However, proper prenatal care can decrease the risk of some rare causes of this disorder.
