Treatment of Conjunctivitis

An inflammation of the conjunctiva, a fine membrane covering the front of your eyes, is classified as conjunctivitis. This is an extremely infectious disease also known as ‘eye flu’, ‘pink-eye’ and ‘sore eyes’. It is transmitted by direct contact.

The underneath of the eyelid and eyeballs becomes inflamed, there is pain and a burning sensation, dryness in the eyes with a discharge of sticky substance and blurred vision. Pus could form under and on top of the eyelids in severe cases.

Remedies for Home Treatment of Conjunctivitis

Put a teaspoon of Oregon grape root and 2 teaspoons of chamomile flowers into two cups boiling water. Cool, strain and use as an eyewash. Apply thin slices of peeled and cut potato to the affected eyes. Goldthread leaves brewed in to a tea is also an eye wash that relieves pain, swelling and combats the infection.

A handful quantity of dried coriander made in to a decoction with about 60 millilitres of water also reduces the swelling and pain. Vitamin A and also B2 rich foods are helpful in curing this condition. Papaya, mango, tomato, leafy green vegetables, pumpkin, carrot, butter, yoghurt and whole milk are full of vitamin A, while tomato, banana, citrus fruit. Almond and leafy green vegetables contain Vitamin B2.

Two tsps of honey added to the juice of Indian gooseberry which has medicinal qualities, and imbibed twice a day would also be helpful. Carrot juice of a 200 ml quantity combined with either 200 ml spinach juice or 200 ml raw parsley juice is beneficial as carrot juice has therapeutic qualities and also relieves the condition.

Use a sterile cotton ball dipped in warm water to clear the crust on the eyelashes, and compress the cotton warmly against the eyes for relief. To give respite from the itching, you can make a yoghurt poultice which can be put on the eyes.
