Types Of Epilepsy Seizures
Seizures are amongst the most striking features of epilepsy. There was a time when epilepsy seizures were seen as ghost related activities. People suffering from epilepsy were given unusual forms of treatments and there were lots of myths and dilemmas surrounding this disease.
However, with the development of modern medical science, symptoms of epilepsy are known and now people are treated with scientific approach. Epilepsy seizures can last from a few seconds to several minutes. A patient may remain conscious or he may lose consciousness.
The worst part is that epilepsy seizures do not give you any kind of indications. In terms of categories, they are identified as partial seizures or generalized seizures. As far as partial seizures are concerned, they begin in a particular area of your brain. They are further categorized in three different types: simple, complex and partial seizures with secondary generalization.
Simple partial seizures do not make you lose your consciousness, and a patient may remain fully aware of his condition. However, this is not the case with complex seizures. A person may fee like fainted, and can lose his consciousness in a complete manner. He might remain in this state of unconsciousness for the next several minutes.
The another type of partial seizure that is partial seizure with secondary generalization is the next level of simple or complex seizure. They manifest as simple or complex, and then they gradually move on to affect the other parts of the brain.
In this case, the spread is gradual and they require more care and attention. In the situation of generalized seizures, the entire brain comes under influence. It can be a grand mal seizure, atonic seizure, tonic seizure or myoclonic seizure.
Under grand mal seizure, a person comes across the incident of stiffness in the entire body and his muscles begin to convulse. However, in the case of myoclonic seizure, a patient feels as if he has gone through an electric shock. Atonic seizures make a patient fall on the ground, all of a sudden. He may come across an instant loss of muscle tone and thus a state of sudden debilitation can emerge up.
