When And How To Stop Bottle Feeding?

All of us do like watching our baby sipping milk or water from the bottle. But studies suggest, that sooner the baby gets rid off the bottle, better it would be for his/her health. But then this become a sort of a challenge for the parents to do so. Baby who had been bottle fed right from his birth, may not find it easy to get rid of the bottle and take his/her feed through glass or something.

Baby is too small to understand the importance of hygiene and health and hence, there in no simple way to do it other than to do it gradually so that baby can forget the bottle and start accepting the glass and/or sipper. It is also to be ensured that during the process, baby actually doen’t stop taking the feed altogether or takes less than the minimum required for him/her. If it happens so, then it may lead to some adverse effect on baby’s health and growth.

So the question comes up when is the best time to start this change? Obvious choice would be to do it when the baby actually starts sitting up. As we all know, it is not at all very much feasible and convienent for anyone to drink from the glass in laid down position. The very first step required in this direction is to some how keep the bottle out of baby’s sight. That will help him/her forgetting it a bit easier.

Parents should also be prepared for the fact that this whole process may take a couple of days or even weeks depending upon baby’s behaviour patterns. Initially, start with a glass /sipper once a day or so and the slowly keep on increasing the frequency in the gradual manner.

Ultimately, baby will get into  a habbit and belief that whenever he/she is feeling hungry, he/she will get something in glass and not bottle. so that will not create much problem for the baby either. Also, be preared that initially baby may spill over his/her milk/water while drinking from a glass.

Parents should remain patient about this and any demonstration over anger to baby on this, may actually worsen the process. Baby may also get scared so much that he/she may stop taking feed altogether which can affect advsersly to baby’s health and further growth.
