Obesity - Herbal Weight Loss

Obesity is defined as an excess of body fat. Being overweight is different from being obese. Overweight refers to excess body weight compared to normal standards. The excess weight may come from muscle, bone, fat, and/or body water. Obesity refers specifically to having an abnormally high proportion of body fat.

Body mass index, or BMI, is the measurement used to assess whether a person is overweight or obese. BMI is calculated using a mathematical formula that takes into account both a person's height and weight. A person is considered overweight if they have a BMI of between 25 and 29.9. A BMI of more than 30 is generally considered a sign of moderate to severe obesity.

According to Ayurveda people with a kapha constitution are more likely to gain weight as compared to pitta people and predominantly vata people are the least likely to gain weight. So efforts at reducing body weight must take into consideration a persons constitution also.

Herbal Remedies:

The use of herbs is a time-honored approach to strengthening the body and treating disease. The following have been used traditionally to treat obesity:

Guggul (Commiphora mukul): This is a popular herb used in Ayurveda. Guggul is frequently recommended by Ayurveda practitioners for weight control in addition to use in lowering cholesterol. In clinical trials, intake of guggul derivatives regularly for three months results in four times the weight loss compared to placebo.

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra): Licorice root strengthens the adrenal glands, thus helping to sustain a regulated blood-sugar level and reduce cravings for sweets. Licorice tastes sweet.
Dose: Take a cup of licorice daily, one week out of every month for up to three months.

Triphala (Emblica officinalis): Effective Laxative which takes away fats from body & reduces weight. It is said to promote normal appetite, good digestion, increase red blood cells and hemoglobin. It has strong purifying and antioxidant qualities as well as reducing the overall water content in the body tissues.

Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis): Aloe vera juice improves digestion and cleanses the digestive tract.

Garcinia Cambogia: Garcinia slows down the enzyme process that is responsible for producing fat within the body's cells. As a result, the process of thermogenesis is accelerated. The active ingredient in Garcinia cambogia, hydroxy-citric acid, has been shown to help reduce appetite by maintaining blood sugar levels in the body. It also helps promote the conversion of blood sugar into glycogen rather than fat.

People who are overweight almost always have an excess of ama in their bodies. Getting rid of the body of its ama is a primary strategy of Ayurvedic treatment. The following herbs and compounds are effective in reducing ama:

Symptoms:

Most practitioners use the following BMI ranges as indications that a person is overweight or obese:

  • BMI 25 to 29.9 (overweight)
  • BMI 30 to 39.9 (moderately obese)
  • BMI 40 or above (extremely obese)

Obese men and women are more at risk for many diseases:

  • Diabetes
  • Gallstones
  • Heart and blood vessel problems, such as stroke and coronary heart disease
  • High cholesterol (including high triglyceride levels)
  • High blood pressure
  • Bone-related arthritis
  • Abnormal levels of fat in your blood
  • Sleep apnea (interrupted breathing while you sleep) syndrome.
Diet:

Diet plans are enormously popular today. They range from traditional low-fat, high-carbohydrate diets to the more controversial high-protein, high-fat, low-carbohydrate diets. Thrive on plenty of water and juices-lemon, grape fruit, orange, pineapple. Add garden-fresh salads , raw green vegetables and fres fruits to your low-calorie.

Before you begin any weight loss program, see your doctor. If a hormone imbalance is causing you to gain weight, you may need to see an endocrinologist for the best care. Your doctor will have good ideas about what type of diet or weight loss plan might suit you best, which foods to eat, which times of day to eat, and so on. If possible, you should exercise while you diet.

Tips, Advice:

First, you must have a burning desire to eat healthy foods and be conscious and careful about what you put in your mouth. You must establish the right dietary intake that is good for your body type. Second, you must also have a burning desire to keep trim by losing weight, if you already are heavy. Third, you must have discipline to identify the kinds of foods that are good for you and discipline and constrain yourself to these type of foods. Fourth, condition your mind to love these foods and imagine the good health they will bring to your life in terms of energy, vigor, zest, vitality and the wonderful feeling you would have when you do this.

Green Tea (Camellia sinensis): Green tea enhances the ability of the body to burn fat. Choose a standardized extract containing 50 percent catechin and 90 percent total polyphenols and take 300 milligrams thirty minutes before breakfast and another thirty minutes before lunch. Do not take more.

Take 2 Triphala capsules twice daily after meals. Allow several weeks for benefits. "It's something you stay on regularly. It can be very helpful to you." Dr. Andrew Weil
