Home Remedies for Tonsillitis

  • Milk is commonly used in throat infection and tonsillitis. The milk therapy is to be done for three nights. Take a glass full of milk, boil it, and add a pinch of pepper powder and turmeric powder. Drink this milk before going to bed. Consumption of this milk when it is hot, gives much relief in tonsillitis. This is one of the best home remedies for tonsillitis.

  • About ten to twelve gram of Banafsha (Viola pilosa Blume ) flowers must be boiled in forty to fifty ml of milk. Filter it and must be consumed hot. This gives again relief to throat. It is an effective home remedy for tonsillitis.

  • A poultice of banafsha flowers is also very useful to get relief in the condition of tonsillitis. Fry lightly some banafsha in ghee (butter oil made up of cow’s milk) and just tie around throat. This must be done in night so that it can be kept for long time. It is also a good remedy for tonsillitis.


  • Limejuice is also found valuable to treat tonsillitis. Take a glass full of warm water, add four to five teaspoon of honey, two to three pinches of salt, and squeeze a fresh lime in it. Drink it slowly by taking sip by sip. This is one of the good home remedies for tonsillitis.

  • Fenugreek seed gargle is one of the most effective remedy for tonsillitis. To prepare this solution of fenugreek gargle, take one liter of water, add two to three tablespoon of fenugreek seeds. Keep it on the low gas for half an hour. Then keep aside to be cool. This solution must be used as a gargle within a single day. This gives better relief to throat. This is one of the simple and useful home remedies for tonsillitis.

  • Consumption of vegetable juices is also very beneficial for tonsillitis. Juices made from cucumber of about hundred ml, carrot juice of about three hundred ml and juice from beet of about hundred ml. This formula can be used as home remedy for tonsillitis.

  • Application of cold pack is also very beneficial for the condition of tonsillitis. This must be done at the interval of two to three hour.

  • Boil a cup of milk, add crushed five to six leaves of holly basil, add a pinch of turmeric powder. Drink it when it is warm.

  • Certain Ayurvedic herbs like yashtimadhu, ginger, garlic, black pepper, pushkarmool, kantakari etc are considered as very beneficial for treating upper respiratory tract infections. They are effective natural cures for tonsillitis.

  • Some of the Ayurvedic formula like pushkarmool churna, kantakari avaleha, sitopaladi churna, talisadi churna, eladi vati is practiced to treat upper respiratory treatment since years in Ayurvedic science.

  • One should avoid cold items, oily foods, junk foods and cold drinks. These are the triggers for upper respiratory diseases.

  • One should avoid direct blow of wind in any form. That is one should not drive in open air (wear helmet or cover your face leaving eyes), one should not sit directly under the fan or in front of air-conditioner.
