Herbal Remedies:

The use of herbs is a time-honored approach to strengthening the body and treating disease. The following have been used traditionally to treat stress:

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera): In trials by American psychiatrists, this herb had been found useful for the treatment of manic depression, alcoholic paranoia, and schizophrenia. Up to 4 capsules were given daily, in between meals, for 45-60 days with very good results. This herb was given to 30 mental patients suffering from anxiety neurosis in doses of 40 ml/day. (in two equally divided doses.) for one month. At the end of the month, most of the anxiety disorders, panic attacks and similar mood phobias, had disappeared.

Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri): Brahmi is a nervine tonic that enhances learning ,academic performance and improves mental ability. It is used in Ayurveda for the treatment of asthma, hoarseness, insanity and epilepsy and is also a potent nerve tonic, cardiotonic, aperient and diuretic. It acts as an anti-anxiety agent and also calms restlessness in children and is used in several mental disorders.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale): In addition to its uplifting flavor, there are other good reasons to take ginger along with any other antidepressant herbs that you are taking. Ginger has a long folk history of use for treating anxiety and depression.

St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum): St. John's wort has a long history of folk use for treating anxiety and depression. Clinical studies show that treatment with just one of the active compounds in this herb, hypericin, results in significant improvement in anxiety, depression and feelings of worthlessness. It has fewer side effects. Studies also show that St.-John's-wort improves sleep quality, often a major problem for people who are seriously depressed. How To Take: Make a tea made by steeping one to two teaspoons of dried herb in a cup of boiling water for ten minutes.

Advice:
  • Don't believe all of your negative thinking
  • Avoid drugs and alcohol. Both make depression worse.
  • Avoid making big life decisions when you're depressed.
  • Try not to get discouraged. It will take time for your depression to lift fully.
