Until now, both were
level pegging - 40% of cases linked to men, 40% to women and 20% to joint problems. However, the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology found rates of an IVF
treatment typically used to help male infertility have risen. It said a number of factors including declining sperm quality due to environmental toxins may be involved.
Use of ICSI (intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection), in which a single sperm is injected into the egg to fertilise it, made up only 43% of IVF cycles in 1997, but accounted for 52% of cycles in 2002.
There were more than 122,000 ICSI cycles and nearly 113,000 IVF cycles in 2002, the ESHRE committee announced at its annual meeting in Copenhagen on Wednesday.
The data came from 24 European countries.
Dr Anders Nyboe Anderson, coordinator of the committee, said: "We do not really know why ICSI has become more prevalent. There are probably many reasons."
It could be that the causes of infertility are shifting.
He added: "We see less and less infertility caused by severe tubal [fertility tube] problems in women, probably because of better sexual protection due to the risk of Aids during the last 15 years."
However he said the data on male subfertility showed it appeared to be increasing.
Dr Anderson said: "Maybe environmental factors are playing an increasing role as the planet becomes more polluted and factors that disrupt the endocrine system are in the food chain."
But he said it was more likely that ICSI was becoming the preferred method of assisted reproduction, as the technique has improved since its introduction in the early 1990s.
He said private clinics tended to use ICSI rather than IVF to improve the chance of success first time, even though both techniques have the same take-home-baby rate.
Another theory is that men, like women, are increasingly putting off starting a family until they are older, when fertility is lower, Dr Anderson said.
More and more men aged 50-65 are now attending fertility clinics - men over 40 making up nearly a quarter of consultations, the study said.
In separate research, a team of Canadian scientists have found damage to DNA in sperm increases with age.
By analysing the sperm of 2,134 men they found a wide variation in quality that was linked with age.
DNA damage was far higher in men over 45 than in younger men - men aged 45 had double the damage of those younger than 30.
He said data from the US showed that the birth rate for fathers older than 35 had increased by nearly 20% between 1980 and 1995.
Lead author Dr Sergey Moskotsev, of the Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, told the ESHRE conference: "The effect of age on male infertility is particularly interesting because of the growth in the number of men choosing to father children at older ages.
"The combination of increased female factor infertility, increased sperm DNA damage, low levels of DNA repair and increased abnormalities in conventional semen parameters will have a pronounced impact on their reproductive potential."
Dr Allan Pacey, Senior Lecturer in Andrology at the University of Sheffield and Secretary of the British Fertility Society, said: "This should remind us that the male reproductive system is not immune from the effects of ageing.
"Whilst the effects of aging are not as dramatic as are seen in women, subtle changes in DNA quality could seriously affect a couple's ability to conceive, or could lead to miscarriage or even health problems in any children born.
"Having a family when you are younger is always a good plan."

is reported to be effective in improving the morphology and motility of the sperms, as reported by various workers. It is a compound of indigenous drugs reputed to have a pharmacological action in oligospermia. It tones up the system, improves the general vitality and acts as a restorative and nervine tonic. Speman also effects a more complete and powerful contraction of the seminal vesicles, consequently bringing about their complete evacuation and increases the quantity of semen ejaculated. Speman is a drug well reported upon and reputed in an important clinical condition where modern medicine offers little hope.. |

More than 2.5 million men in Britain could have low fertility, a report says.
The research by Norwich Union Healthcare estimates that 9% of the UK's 28.5 million men might have difficulty conceiving.
Of GPs questioned, a third were worried declining male fertility would add to ageing population issues. Many blamed smoking and alcohol for the trend.

Sperm quality and number have declined in the last 30 years, work suggests.
Fertility decline
Male infertility accounts for about a third of couples' problems conceiving.
More than a quarter (29%) of the 202 GPs surveyed said that low male fertility would have a detrimental impact on the nation's population in the future unless men changed their bad lifestyles now.
Nearly half (44%) said smoking was the overwhelming main contributing factor to low male fertility. One in 10 (11%) blamed alcohol and 7% blamed stress.
However, other factors could also be involved. For example, many couples are postponing having children to their thirties when their fertility has naturally decreased.
GP Ann Robinson said: "The results of this survey are shocking and should be a wake-up call to men and women that drinking and smoking too much not only gives you a bad headache in the morning but can affect your ability to start a family."
Over half of the 797 men surveyed by Norwich Union Healthcare believed women were most likely to suffer from fertility difficulties and only 12% viewed their own fertility as a concern when thinking about starting a family.
Half of men were more concerned with the financial implications of raising a child than their ability to father one.
Dr Doug Wright, clinical spokesman for Norwich Union Healthcare, said: "The report clearly disproves the common misconception that women are the only sufferers of fertility issues.
"With the next generation facing increasing pressure as a result of declining fertility and mortality rates, it's only fair that men accept their responsibility in the equation and change their lifestyles now before it's too late."
Clare Brown, chief executive of Infertility Network UK, said: "It is commonly thought that women are the only sufferers of fertility issues but in around one third of couples who suffer from infertility, it is a male factor problem which is the issue.
"We would encourage men as well as women to consider their fertility and adopt a healthy lifestyle, even before they consider trying to conceive.
"Discovering you have a fertility problem has a devastating effect on people's lives and any steps which couples can take to minimise the chances of suffering infertility such as giving up smoking and cutting down on alcohol should be encouraged."

MALE fertility is plunging. And nearly one in 10 men may be suffering, according to a survey published last month. The Male Fertility Study, compiled by Norwich Union Healthcare from a survey of GPs, suggests that 2.5 million British men are affected, and many do not even know they may be at risk. The scale of the problem was first recognised in 1991 when a Danish study found that sperm counts of Western men had fallen by about half in 50 years. Almost 15 years later, scientists are still trying to explain it.

Male fertility can be far more changeable than in women. Unlike women - who are born with a finite number of eggs - men are continually producing sperm. But samples from the same men taken as little as a month apart can vary dramatically. “We’ve had patients whose sperm has been fine. But on the day of their IVF treatment, the man has had little or no sperm at all because he’s had a bad bout of flu,” says Dr Iwan Lewis-Jones, a consultant andrologist at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital and an expert in male infertility. Here are some of the other things that scientists believe may have an effect on male fertility.
If you happen to be partial to convenience or fast food - which is often packed full of “hidden soy” - you may be heading for a host of fertility problems. Scientists believe chemicals in the soya bean mimic oestrogen.
Dr Sheena Lewis, who conducted the latest research, says chemicals found in soya appear to lower sperm count and affect the ability of sperm to swim. “The results concern us,” she says.
A mounting body of evidence reveals that sitting behind the wheel for long periods is bad for sperm. Italian researchers found taxi drivers, truckers and other professional drivers all had reduced fertility levels. Another study by French researchers found that even driving for two hours can raise testicle temperature by around 2C.
Years of using a laptop regularly “may cause irreversible or partially irreversible changes in male reproductive function”, according to one study. It is well known that sperm production drops if the environment within the testicles becomes too hot, which is why they are housed outside the main part of the body.
The study, published in the journal Human Reproduction, found that laptops can reach internal operating temperatures of over 70C. “They are frequently placed close to the scrotum.
Another fertility scare came from the University of Szeged in Hungary, which claimed mobile phones could lower sperm counts by up to a third because of the radiation they emit. What’s more, the ability of the sperm to swim properly was also found to be impaired, particularly among men who made long calls.
Not everyone accepts the evidence as conclusive, however. “This research failed to take into account other aspects of men’s lifestyles. Men who use mobiles often have very different lifestyles to those who don’t,” says Allan Pacey, a fertility expert at the University of Sheffield and spokesman for the British Fertility Society.
It’s widely accepted that smoking tobacco reduces sperm count, impairs sperm movement and makes them less able to penetrate an ovum. The good news is that if you quit, the health of your sperm will start to improve within two months. Smoking also restricts the blood flow to the genitals, which contributes to a man’s inability to get an erection. A man in his 30s or 40s can increase the risk of impotence by around 50 per cent.
Wear loose underpants and lose the leather trousers. It’s not a myth.
Studies show they can reduce a man’s chances of fathering a baby by overheating sperm-producing cells in testicles, which lowers sperm count. by Kate Hilpern
