How Terminalia Arjuna is Useful?
Terminalia Arjuna is a deciduous evergreen tree. The bark of this tree is known for its medicinal properties, which is mostly considered to be cardiotonic/cardioprotective agent. Enhancement of cardiac-muscle function and its ensuing pumping activity is the main benefit of Teminalia. There are a number of human studies carried out on the bark of this tree. However, they are small in sample size. Nonetheless, the extract of the bark seems to be quite effective in enhancing cardiac function in people, who have undergone cardiac injury or trauma recently. Myocardial infarction is one of the most typically studied conditions. Various studies have showed the benefits of the herb in enhancing the function of left ventricle, which can help a person irrespective of the health-state.
In the animal models, the extract of the bark appears to give protection against cardiac tissue. Other extracts like acetone or ethanolic with different bioactives might not have the same cardioprotective effects yet to some extent is cancer protective. In the animal models, it is proved that the tumour growth is reduced with isolated Arjunolic Acid (a common bioactive) or ethanolic extract. This study establishes the anti-cancer properties of the ethanolic extract. The other benefits of Arjuna include stomach and ulcer protection with potency comparable to Rantidine.
The saponin glycosides are accountable for Terminalia’s inotropic effect while vascular strengthening and free-radical antioxidant property is provided by the OPcs and flavonoids. A dose-dependent reduction in the blood pressure and heart rate was noticed in dogs, which were given the herb intravenously. In a recent research, two more glycosides (cardenoilide cardiac) were separated from the seed and root of the tree. The main property of cardenolides is to enhance the strength of cardiac contraction through both intracellular calcium and sodium.

Common causes of heart diseases
Cardiovascular diseases are the major causes of death in most countries. Various factors are linked to heart diseases. Atherosclerosis or plaque build up in the coronary arteries is the most prominent cause of coronary artery disease. The plaque gradually accumulates in the blood vessels. It might take several years to experience the effect of narrowing of the coronary arteries owing to plaque formation. The narrowing of the arteries obstructs blood supply to the heart muscles. If the condition is left untreated for a long time, the plaque might completely obstruct blood flow to the heart muscles. In the absence of oxygenated blood, the affected tissues in the heart eventually die, thereby reducing the pumping activity of the heart, which in the worst case causes death.
Why Terminalia arjuna is good for the heart
Terminalia arjuna is native to the Indian subcontinent. The deciduous tree could grow up to a height of 90 feet. For more than three hundred years, the bark of the arjuna tree is used in Ayurvedic medicine as a cardiac tonic. The white to pinkish gray colored bark of the tree contains flavonoids, tannins, gallic acid, oligomeric proanthocyanidins, triterpenoid saponins, phytosterols, ellganic acid, magnesium, calcium, copper and zinc. Experimental studies and clinical trials indicate the usefulness of the active constituents of arjuna bark in treating coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure. Intake of Terminalia arjuna bark powder is associated with improved cardiac muscle function, which eventually boosts the pumping function of the heart. Scientists speculate that phytochemicals known as saponin glycosides help to improve the contraction of the heart muscles. Oligomeric proanthocyanidins and flavonoids boost the natural antioxidant defense system of the heart and strengthen the vascular system of the body. (“Terminalia arjuna”. Altern Med Rev. 1999 Dec;4(6):436-7). Studies suggest that Terminalia arjuna might prevent atherothrombosis by inhibiting plateless aggregation in cornary artery disease patients.(Malik N, Dhawan V, Bahl A, Kaul D. “Inhibitory effects of Terminalia arjuna on platelet activation in vitro in healthy subjects and patients with coronary artery disease.” Platelets. 2009 May;20(3):183-90).
Helps to treat angina
Angina or severe chest pain occurs when the heart muscle fails to receive sufficient oxygenated blood to perform its pumping function. Studies indicate that angina might be managed with Terminalia arjuna bark powder. In a small clinical trial, researchers found that the frequency and severity of the angina pain could be reduced and the onset of angina could be delayed in stable angina patients with arjuna. Echocardiography and treadmill tests of the patients suggest that daily intake of arjuna bark powder could prevent 50 percent of the angina episodes within three months. In people with mild angina, the changes in the heart muscles owing to ischemia might be reversed by taking this herb. No adverse effect of the herb on kidneys and liver functions has been observed in clinical studies. (Dwivedi S, Agarwal MP. “Antianginal and cardioprotective effects of Terminalia arjuna, an indigenous drug, in coronary artery disease.” Department of Medicine, UCMS, Delhi). The effect of arjuna bark powder on stable angina patients is comparable to isosorbide mononitrate. (Bharani A, Ganguli A, Mathur LK, Jamra Y, Raman PG. “Efficacy of Terminalia arjuna in chronic stable angina: a doubl- blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study comparing Terminalia arjuna with isosorbide mononitrate.” Indian Heart J. 2002 Mar-Apr;54(2):170-5).
How to prevent coronary artery disease naturally
To prevent coronary artery disease, you should identify the factors responsible for this condition. Smoking, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, excess body weight, a sedentary lifestyle and high blood sugar level increase the risk of coronary artery disease.
A healthy lifestyle could reduce the risk of developing coronary artery disease. What you eat affects your blood pressure and blood cholesterol level. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains products. Increase the proportion of omega-3 fatty acid rich foods in your daily diet. Fish oil is one of the richest sources of this heart healthy fat. You would also find these polyunsaturated fatty acids in flaxseed, walnuts, canola oil and whole grains. Limit consumption of foods and beverages with added sugar. Add not more than 2400mg of salt to your daily diet. Reduce your daily salt intake by avoiding fast foods and processed foods. Eliminate trans fats from your diet. Trans fats present in hydrogenated vegetable oil and margarine would boost the level of harmful lipids in the blood. They are present in deep fried foods and processed foods. Limit consumption of saturated fats found in dairy products and red meat. Not more than 10 percent of your daily calorie intake should be met by saturated fats. Substitute the unhealthy fats in your diet with healthy fats such as lean meat, low fat milk and dairy, fish, olive oil and vegetable oil. Drink in moderation. Two drinks per day and one drink each day are sufficient respectively for men and women who love drinking.
Regular physical activity coupled with a healthy diet is more beneficial for your heart. By boosting the metabolism rate of the body, exercises would help you to burn the extra calories. Exercises might protect you from coronary artery diseases. However, if you are accustomed to a sedentary lifestyle, you should gradually increase the level of your physical activities. Start with low to moderate intensity workouts such as brisk walking, swimming, cycling and jogging. At least 2 ½ hours of workout, each week are needed to maintain the normal health of the heart. A typical exercise regime would comprise of ten to fifteen minutes of stretching exercises to warm up the muscles and gradually raise the heart rate. These exercises should be followed by low to medium impact aerobic exercises. You can also add strength-building workouts with weights to your fitness routine. Regular exercises might prevent atherosclerosis and angina by lowering the serum cholesterol and triglycerides, decreasing the blood pressure and by maintaining a healthy body weight.
You can cut the risk of coronary artery disease by quitting smoking. Secondhand smoking is equally bad for the heart. Stress and depression might worsen your cardiovascular malfunction. Stress and depression might be managed through mediation, workouts, deep breathing exercises, tai chi and yoga. Cognitive behavioral therapy might help you to develop a positive outlook towards life.
