Skin problems are many and varied. The quality of your skin depends on your lifestyle, your skin care routine and the condition of your health. Acne is the most common skin problem that is usually attributed to hormonal changes that occur during puberty. Although it is more common among teens and young adults, even babies and adults could suffer from acne. Increase in the male sex hormone or androgen during adolescence activates the oil producing sebaceous glands, leading to excess sebum secretion. The excess oil tends to clog the pores on the skin, creating a suitable environment for the microbes to survive. Moreover, the excess sebum changes the pH of the skin, thereby activating the P. acnes bacteria.
Acne might occur in the form of non-inflammatory blackheads and whiteheads or in the form of large pus-filled lesions. The large painful cysts often cause scarring. Constant friction caused by rubbing or scrubbing the skin increases the risk of acne. In women, hormonal changes before menstrual periods trigger acne breakouts. Acne is also linked to stress. Use of improper cosmetics that makes the skin greasy or sensitivity to certain ingredients in cosmetics might cause skin rash. Acne could be the side effect of certain medications.
Prolonged exposure to the ultraviolet radiation of the sun damages the skin tissues. The risk of sunburn is higher among light-skinned people. It accelerates skin aging. The ultraviolet B rays of the sun are especially harmful for the skin. Skin cancers are often associated with photo damage caused by prolonged exposure to the solar radiation. |

Neem is extensively used for managing several illnesses. The therapeutic attributes of neem are well documented in Ayurvedic texts. The medicinal properties of the plant have been proved in experimental studies and clinical trials. Nearly every part of Azadirachta indica is used for manging illnesses. The anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antiulcer, anticarcinogenic, immunomodulatory and antioxidant properties of the leaves, fruits, seeds, bark, flowers and roots of the neem plant help to prevent and overcome skin problems. Scientists have isolated over 140 plant compounds from different parts of the plant.
Prevents fungal infections of the skin
Azadirachta indica could inhibit growth of fungi on the skin. The leaves and seeds of the plant are especially effective in arresting the activities of dermatophytes or fungi linked to infections of the skin and nails. (Natarajan V, Venugopal PV, Menon T. “Effect of Azadirachta indica (neem) on the growth pattern of dermatophytes.” Indian J Med Microbiol. 2003 Apr-Jun;21(2):98-101).
Prevents bacterial infections
As a natural antibiotic, Azadirachta indica could prevent a wide range of bacterial infections. It could be used for healing pseudomonas skin rash that usually develops by sharing bathtubs contaminated with the bacteria. It is also effective in eliminating skin infection from Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria, Micrococcus flavus and other bacterial strains. (Rao DV, Singh I, Chopra P, Chhabra PC, Ramanujalu G. “In vitro antibacterial activity of Neem oil.” Indian J Med Res. 1986 Sep;84:314-6).
Reduces acne
The astringent and antibacterial effects of Azadirachta indica could suppress acne flare-ups and improve the quality of the skin. Experimental studies suggest that by suppressing the activities of the P. acnes bacteria, which live on the skin, Azadirachta indica or neem prevents acne. Acne breakouts occur owing to activation of inflammatory mediators such as pro-inflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species by the P. acnes bacteria. (Jain A, Basal E. “Inhibition of Propionibacterium acne-induced mediators of inflammation by Indian herbs.” Phytomedicine. 2003 Jan;10(1):34-8).
Kills head and body lice
Neem seed extract could kill larva, eggs and adult body and head lice. (Mehlhorn H, Abdel-Ghaffar F, Al-Rasheid KA, Schmidt J, Semmler M. “Ovicidal effects of a neem seed extract preparation on eggs of body and head lice.” Parasitol Res. 2011 Apr 12).
Protects the skin from ultraviolet radiation
Prolonged exposure to sunlight not only makes the skin darker but it also increases the risk of developing skin cancer. Exposure to the ultraviolet B rays of the sun damages DNA. The damaged DNA triggers abnormal melanin synthesis or melanogenesis, which damages the natural complexion of the skin. Azadirachta indica reduces skin tanning by lowering the melanin content in the skin.
Reduces risk of skin cancer
Abnormal melanogenesis is a symptom of skin cancer. The potent antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic effects of Azadirachta indica leaves inhibit growth of melanoma, a type of skin cancer that originates in the melanin producing cells or melanocytes. Moreover, the anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor activities of the active components in the medicinal plants prevent growth of skin tumors. (Akihisa T, Noto T, Takahashi A, Fujita Y, Banno N, Tokuda H, Koike K, Suzuki T, Yasukawa K, Kimura Y. “Melanogenesis inhibitory, anti-inflammatory, and chemopreventive effects of liminoids from the seeds of Azadirachta indica A. Juss. (neem).” J Oleo Sci. 2009;58(11):581-94). |

According to Ayurvedic texts, accumulation of impurities in the blood is responsible for rashes, pimples, boils and other skin disorders. The liver helps to detoxify the blood. If the liver is diseased or it fails to perform its normal functions, the toxin level rises in the blood, making the skin vulnerable to disorders. To reduce the risk of skin disorders, the detoxification function of the liver should continue uninhibited.
Unhealthy diet increases the toxin content in the blood. Moreover, prolonged exposure to the toxic substances damages the liver tissues and leads to liver dysfunction. To reduce ingestion of toxic chemicals, it is advisable to consume organically grown fruits, vegetables and grain. The nutrient dense organic foods are beneficial for your overall health. Foods containing sulfur compounds such as garlic, onion and cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels’s sprout are especially beneficial for the liver tissues. To sustain the detoxification function of the liver, limit alcohol intake.
By nourishing the skin, a balanced diet could reduce the risk of skin disorders. The fish in your meals would help to make your skin smoother and softer. The omega-3 fats present in fish oil is beneficial for the skin. Vegetarians could enjoy the benefits of omega-3 fats by consuming flaxseeds and walnuts.
The mounting pollutants and toxins in the environment boost the level of free radicals in the body. Oxidative stress resulting from the heightened scavenging activities of free radicals increases the risk of premature aging of the skin. To preserve the natural elasticity of the skin and to delay aging, you should enrich your diet with antioxidant compounds. Vitamins A and E are potent antioxidant nutrients. Beta-carotene rich yellow, orange and dark green colored vegetables could help to replenish the vitamin A reserve in your body. You can obtain vitamin E from nuts and seeds. To increase absorption of vitamin E, you should consume vitamin C rich fruits and vegetables.
Besides nutrient deficiency, skin disorders might be triggered by external factors such as overgrowth of P. acnes bacteria and fungi. Improper cleaning might increase the risk of microbe overgrowth. Cleaning with soap or a cleansing solution and water helps to remove the superficial dirt. However, for removing the dead skin cells from the skin, you should use an exfoliating product. |

Psoriasis:
Sheryll Zenganeh the publisher of "Empress Press", a national newsletter for people with psoriasis and other serious skin conditions, has promoted the effectiveness of Neem. Sheryll suffered from Psoriasis for seventeen years before she came in contact with Neem. She stated in her newsletter that "today, thanks to the Neem tree and the products from NeemAura Naturals, my psoriasis is virtually gone and I now has soft, supple, youthful, gorgeous skin."
In clinical studies Neem extracts and oil were found to be as effective as coal tar and cortisone in treating psoriasis. However there were none of the usual side effects accompanying the use of Neem as there was with Coal tar and cortisone. When applied to the skin, Neem extracts and oil removed the redness and itching while improving the condition of the skin for the duration of the treatment.
Eczema:
In the case of eczema clinical studies demonstrate that even the application of weaker Neem leaf extracts effectively cured acute conditions of eczema, what to speak of the fresh cold pressed oil with its high concentration of active ingredients. Using a Soap or shampoo containing Neem oil can easily relieve the itching and redness of eczema. For specific areas of intensity on your skin apply Neem cream after bathing and/or shampooing with Neem oil products.
"I just want to comment that this Neem product has worked tremendously well for the excema I have around one of my eyes and my nose. Thank you" Lisa, USA
Acne:
Neem effectively kills the bacteria that cause Acne and studies prove that Neem will reduce inflammation, even the inflammation produced by Acne.
Skin problems in general:
Dry Skin, Wrinkles, Dandruff, Itchy Scalp, Skin Ulcers and Warts are other conditions that can be effectively resolved by the use of soaps, lotions, and creams, containing Neem leaf extracts and oil.
Neem's effectiveness against Periodontal Disease
Throughout India and South East Asia hundreds of millions of village people use Neem twigs and leaves to brush their teeth, and keep their gums free of disease and infection even though they have limited access to modern dental care. The ancient Ayurvedic practice of using Neem to heal and rejuvenate gum tissue and to prevent cavities and gum disease is verified in modern clinical studies.
Studies showed that Neem bark is more active then the leaves against certain bacteria and that Neem based tooth pastes and mouth washes significantly improved Pyorrhea, at various stages, in 70 patients. In another study Neem toothpaste prevented and even reversed gingivitis.
Neem’s effects on the immune system
I just mentioned how millions of people in India and Southeast Asia maintain excellent oral hygiene standards by brushing with Neem Twigs on a daily basis, there is however, another reason why these people brush with Neem twigs every morning. According to the ancient healing system of Ayurveda the bark of the Neem tree will strengthen an individuals resistance to disease. Modern clinical studies have identified a number of compounds in the Neem tree that effectively regulate immune system functions. |

Neem touches the daily life of almost every Indian, from the poorest peasant who snaps off a twig to use as a toothbrush, to wealthier individuals who purchase manufactured neem-based toothpastes, soaps and medicines. Therefore, when manufacturers in India applied for government approval of a new neem capsule to be used to treat diabetes, it was granted in under 24 hours. After almost 4,500 years of almost continuous use, even the Indian equivalent of the FDA apparently believes that "anything from neem has to be good" (Larson, 1993).
Preparations from the leaves or oils of the tree are used as general antiseptics, according to a report of The National Research Council's Ad Hoc Panel of the Board on Science and Technology for International Development. Neem's function as a fungicide depends on the compounds gedunin and nimbidol in its leaf.
Diabetes:
Diabetes is still on the increase but effective management through diet and exercise is fast becoming the first line of treatment. In the ancient system of Ayurveda when an excess of one taste causes a disease the opposite taste is introduced into the diet with herbs and food to reduce the imbalance. Diabetes is a disease of excess sweetness so bitter herbs and foods must be used to counteract the imbalance. Neem being very bitter was often used to treat diabetes in Ayurveda. Modern clinical studies reveal that Neem has been effective in treating and preventing Diabetes.
Whether drinking a simple cup of tea out of the leaves or taking extracts of the Neem leaf, Neem significantly and consistently reduced insulin requirements for nonkeytonic, insulin fast, and insulin sensitive forms of Diabetes. Because of the numerous and successful clinical studies with Neem on Diabetes and it's long history of successful use in Ayurveda for the same purpose, the Indian equivalent of the FDA has approved the manufacture and sale of Neem tablets, by Pharmaceutical companies, for the treatment of Diabetes.
Arthritis:
Traditionally Ayurveda has recommended the use of Neem leaf, seed, and bark, for reducing arthritic pain and inflammation and for halting the progression of the disease as well. The use of Neem for these purposes has been confirmed by modern clinical studies.
The pain, inflammation, and swelling of the joints in arthritis can be greatly reduced by different compounds in Neem. In numerous clinical studies the polysaccharides and other compounds of Neem leaf extract have produced a reduction in the inflammation caused by arthritis. One of the major components in Neem seed, which has demonstrated a significant effect against arthritis, is nimbidin. Other components that possess anti-inflammatory properties are limonoids and catechin.
There are several reasons why the compounds in Neem work so well. It appears that these compounds make a number of adjustments to various mechanisms in the body, which explains their anti-inflammatory effects. There is an inhibition in the release of mediators of acute inflammation, an antihistaminic effect, and a modification in the functioning of the immune system response. This last effect is extremely important. Neem's ability to change the way the immune system responds to arthritis, by reducing the generation of inflammation producing chemicals, may also be the reason why it halts the progress of the disease and why it may hold the promise of an actual cure.
In addition to its anti-inflammatory effects there are several leaf compounds like the above mentioned polysaccharides, catechin, and limonoids, which are clinically proven to be more potent than aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) in decreasing prostaglandin synthetase and the pain it causes.
Rheumatism:
Rheumatism or Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune condition that can cause serious pain and inflammation. Modern medicine uses strong drugs like phenyl butazone and cortisone to relive the pain and inflammation of Rheumatism, however these drugs can cause many uncomfortable side effects. Clinical studies have conclusively demonstrated that the anti-inflammatory activities of various compounds in Neem leaves are equally as effective as phenyl butazone and cortisone.
In addition to relieving pain and inflammation the active constituents in Neem leaves are clinically proven to inhibit the prostaglandin mechanism, that causes pain, more effectively than aspirin. In the same study Neem significantly reduced acute paw edema as well. The consumption of Neem Leaf capsules and the topical application of slightly warmed Neem cream can help to alleviate the pain and inflammation of this condition.
Chronic Fatigue:
There are two schools of thought on what causes of Chronic Fatigue.
Some are convinced that it is related to the Epstein Barr virus others believe that it is related to the candida albicans fungus. In either case Neem extracts have been proven clinically effective against both the virus and the fungus that are the suspected causes of Chronic Fatigue. Because the immune system becomes compromised in Chronic Fatigue Neem’s ability to enhance the immune response on a cellular level enhances its usefulness for this condition.
Cancer:
For centuries in India and Southeast Asia Ayurvedic practitioners and herbalists have successfully used Neem to reduce tumors. Clinical research performed in Europe and India using the polysaccharides and limonoids found in Neem bark, leaves, and seeds demonstrated some remarkable effects against cancers. These compounds not only reduced tumors and cancers but were also effective against lymphocytic leukemia. An amazing reduction in tumor size was reported when Neem extracts were injected around the tumors. |

There is plenty of scientific backup for Neem's immune enhancement properties as a booster of the macrophage's effectiveness. Scientific studies indicate that Neem boosts the immune system by energizing lymphocytes cells to respond to infection and other challenges to the body's immunity. Clinical trials were conducted on 9 patients of congestive heart failure with anasarca to study the diuretic effect of sodium nimbidinate. 250mg were administered daily by deep intra-muscular injection in the gluteal region. The injections were repeated for 2-13 days with an average of about 5 injections per patient. Four other patients were also studied as controls on the same lines with bed rest, low sodium diet and adequate digitalization without any diuretic. Eight of the patients showed a definite diuretic response. The control group did not show any diuresis. No toxic reaction was noted except local discomfort or slight pain. Clinical trials were conducted on 12 cases of congestive cardiac failure with sodium nimbidinate for diuretic activity. Encouraging diuretic activity was observed with good response in 4 cases. There was no significant toxicity.
Neem's role as a wonder drug is traced as far back as 4500 years ago. The benefits of neem are listed in the ancient documents Caraka-Samhita and Susruta Samhita, the books at the foundation of the Indian system of natural treatment, ayurveda. |
