This perennial herb is grown freely in wild and reaches the height of 1-3 feet. It has erect stem. Its leaves are of pale green in colour. Calyx and corolla is marked with black dots and lines. Sepals and petals are 5 in number. Ovary is peered shaped with three long styles. Stamens in three bundles joined by their bases. Its flowers have peculiar smell and tastes bitter and astringent.

St John's Wort mechanism is believed to inhibit serotonin (5 HT) much like conventional anti depressant. Hyperforin and hypercium shows to inhibit 5HT,dopamine, noradrenaline, GABA and glutamates.
