Trikatu
Digestive problems are many and varied. Few medicines could address several gastrointestinal problems simultaneously. Several centuries ago, Ayurvedic practitioners developed a formulation, named Trikatu, containing black pepper, long pepper and ginger, which could effectively treat digestive disorders without producing any adverse side effect. Trikatu means “three spices”. Experimental and clinical studies have demonstrated the therapeutic attributes of the three spices present in Trikatu.

Trikatu is a herbal compound that is considered as potent carminative as it provides a natural and safe support system for gastric function associated with gaseous distension. Trikatu is a safe digestive, carminative, anti-flatulent and is useful in dyspepsia. It improves gastric functions.
Trikatu is another dietary supplement with exotic Indian herbs that are claimed to be derived from Ayurvedic texts of medicines. The pill is promoted as a natural appetizer and it is one of the best agents as weight loss formula that also may check food cravings. Highlighted to be a digestive tonic for the assimilation of other foods in the body, Trikatu is considered to assist weight loss by maximizing metabolism along with balancing blood-glucose to decrease food cravings.
Trikatu is reported to be not only an anti-mucus and digestive powder used to tone up gastric and respiratory function, but also to be useful in cases of obesity, weak digestion, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, hypothyroid, slow metabolism, congestion, cough, and various inflammatory conditions. Nevertheless, it is to be mentioned that Trikatu may be quite beneficial to our overall health, since it contains some unique ingredients and herbs. However, patient with hyperacidity should use this drug with caution. |

Heartburn, bloating, gas, abdominal pain, burping, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea are the common symptoms of digestive disorders. Dyspepsia or indigestion is characterized by a feeling of fullness. There are several causes of dyspepsia. It can develop if you swallow excess air. It could be a sign of acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Intolerance to milk, dairy products and gluten could cause indigestion. Anxiety, stress and depression might trigger this condition. In some people, consumption of caffeine and alcohol causes indigestion. Prolonged intake of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs could harm the gastric mucosa leading to gastrointestinal discomfort, which might lead to gastric ulcers.
Prolonged dyspepsia should not be ignored. Pain and discomfort in the stomach might be a sign of peptic ulcer. Inflammation in the stomach or intestines and gallbladder pain could impair the normal digestion process. Presence of hiatal hernia might cause dyspepsia. In the worst case, dyspepsia implies present of cancer tumors in the stomach. |

Trikatu is an ancient Ayurvedic preparation comprising of black pepper (Piper nigrum), long pepper (Piper longum) and ginger (Zingiber officinalis) in equal proportions. This herbal formulation is primarily used for treating digestive disorders. |

Black pepper is a widely used spice. The medicinal properties of black pepper or Piper nigrum is primarily attributed to piperine, an alkaloid present in the spice. Piperine is reported to improve appetite and digestion by stimulating secretion of digestive enzymes in the pancreas. It could improve gastrointestinal motility, which helps to prevent abdominal discomforts triggered by delayed emptying of the stomach. Black pepper is a powerful antioxidant. It helps to boost synthesis of antioxidant enzymes. Elevated antioxidant level helps to protect the entire body, including the digestive system from oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is an important cause of DNA mutation. The anti-tumor effect of black pepper might prevent development of tumors in the gastrointestinal tract. Besides improving the health of the digestive tract, Piper nigrum improves absorption of other therapeutic herbs and phytochemicals. Enhanced bioavailability of the constituents of Trikatu owing to the presence of black pepper increases the effectiveness of the Ayurvedic preparation in stimulating appetite and improving digestion. (Srinivasan K. “Black pepper and its pungent principle-piperine: a review of diverse physiological effects.” Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr. 2007;47(8):735-48).
Studies have revealed that piperine could prevent gastric ulcers developing from stress, hyperacidity and overgrowth of H. pyloric bacteria. (Bai YF, Xu H. “Protective action of piperine against experimental gastric ulcer.” Acta Pharmacol Sin. 2000 Apr;21(4):357-9).
Black pepper also stimulates bile secretion without increasing the volume of cholesterol and bile acid. (Ganesh Bhat B, Chandrasekhara N. “Effect of black pepper and piperine on bile secretion and composition in rats.” Nahrung. 1987;31(9):913-6).
It could even protect the gastrointestinal tract from enteric pathogens associated with diarrhea. (Rahman S, Parvez AK, Islam R, Khan MH. “Antibacterial activity of natural spices on multiple drug resistant Escherichia coli isolated from drinking water, Bangladesh.” Ann Clin Microbiol Antimicrob. 2011 Mar 15;10:10). |

The Piper longum fruit is used for treating digestive disorders such as constipation, diarrhea and cholera. (Kumar S, Kamboj J, Suman, Sharma S. “Overview for various aspects of the health benefits of Piper longum linn. fruit.” J Acupunct Meridian Stud. 2011 Jun;4(2):134-40). Piper longum helps to prevent gastric ulcer causes by H. pylorus overgrowth, stress and prolonged aspirin intake. Long pepper prevents erosion of the gastric membrane by stimulating mucin secretion and reducing shedding of the cells present on the stomach lining. (Agrawal AK, Rao CV, Sairam K, Joshi VK, Goel RK. “Effect of Piper longum Linn, Zingiber officianalis Linn and Ferula species on gastric ulceration and secretion in rats.” Indian J Exp Biol. 2000 Oct;38(10):994-8). |

Ginger improves gastric motility, which helps to improve the gastric emptying time and prevents the risk of developing functional dyspepsia. (Hu ML, Rayner CK, Wu KL, Chuah SK, TaiWC, Chou YP, Chiu YC, Chiu KW, Hu TH. “Effect of ginger on gastric motility and symptoms of functional dyspepsia.” World J Gastroenterol. 2011 Jan 7;17(1):105-10). Ginger also prevents gastric ulcers induced by excess growth of H. pylorus bacteria and aspirin intake. Intake of ginger helps the gastric mucosal cells to increase mucus secretion. Increased mucus synthesis reduces corrosion of the stomach wall. Moreover, the mucus shields the gastric wall from the harmful activities of the H. pylorus. Ginger also helps to reduce total acidity. (Khushtar M, Kumar V, Javed K, Bhandari U. “Protective Effect of Ginger oil on Aspirin and Pylorus Ligation-Induced Gastric Ulcer model in Rats.” Indian J Pharm Sci. 2009 Sep;71(5):554-8). Ginger helps to reduce intestinal gas. Its anti-flatulent effect on the lower esophageal sphincter pressure helps to eliminate gas from the intestinal tract. (Lohsiriwat S, Rukkiat M, Chaikomin R, Leelakusolvong S. “Effect of ginger on lower esophageal sphincter pressure.” J Med Assoc Thai. 2010 Mar;93(3):366-72). Ginger stimulates salivation. Saliva, produced by the salivary glands, blends with the carbohydrates in the food in the mouth and initiates carbohydrate metabolism, which consequently eases digestion. (Chamani G, Zarei MR, Mehrabani M, Taghiabadi Y. “Evaluation of Effects of Zingiber officinale on Salivation in Rats.” Acta med Iran. 2011 Jun;49(6):336-40). Ginger is a traditional remedy for nausea and vomiting. It is effective in reducing morning sickness, seasickness and chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. Ginger could also reduce the absolute risk of developing nausea following an operation. Studies suggest that postoperative nausea could be prevented by taking a gram of ginger before operation. (Ernst E, Pittler MH. “Efficacy of ginger for nausea and vomiting: a systematic review of randomized clinical trials.” Br J Anaesth. 2000 Mar;84(3):367-71). |

The underlying assumption behind having Trikatu in seems to be that modern diets usually involve processed foods and not enough fruits and vegetables. As a result, an amount of fiber intake may be less than what it should be, and our digestive power cannot be functioning as it should. However, Trikatu is not a source of fiber but it aids great strength to the digestion by stimulating various digestive enzymes across the gastrointestinal track |

Obesity is having manifold repercussions, not only to the physical health, but also to the psychological heath. It is generally believed that if one takes the recommended amount of dietary fiber, then he or she may also get health benefits like balanced weight, lowered cholesterol levels and reduced risk of colon cancer. Along with enough fiber in the diet, we need balanced diet in order to maintain our body. Trikatu helps in digesting the food and assimilating them well. It keeps the body in shape and many times, it can also be given in reducing the weight. According to Ayurveda, trikatu has capacity of scrapping fat from the body and to burn it. |

Changes in the diet induce digestive problems. To prevent indigestion, you should carefully select the foods that you eat and the beverage that your drink. Even healthy foods such as wheat, barley, rye, milk and dairy could cause bloating, gas, diarrhea and abdominal pain, if you are intolerant or allergic to gluten and lactose. To sustain the normal functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, you should try to preserve the normal microbial balance in the digestive tract by consuming prebiotics and probiotics. Prebiotics are the non-digestible carbohydrate fibers present in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. They aid growth of the beneficial bacteria in the gut. Dietary fibers also improve bowel movement. They could prevent constipation. Probiotics are fermented food products containing live bacteria that are beneficial for the digestive system. Yogurt is a common probiotic food that introduces the beneficial bacteria to the gut.
Both overeating and skipping meals are bad for the health of your digestive system. Indigestion often develops after eating large meals. A fat rich diet is a common cause of abdominal discomfort. To avoid indigestion, you should eat several small meals that are evenly spaced, throughout the day. Eating several small meals prevents the ill effect of overeating and the adverse effect of living on an empty stomach for a long time. To enable proper digestion, chew your food properly. This helps the digestive enzymes in the saliva to blend with the foods in the mouth and break down the carbohydrates. Moreover, chewing helps to breakdown the food particles into small sizes. The digestive enzymes in the stomach work only on the surface of the food particles. If you do not chew properly, the large food fragments entering the stomach are not properly exposed to the digestive enzymes, thereby causing incomplete digestion. Incomplete digestion reduces absorption of nutrients. Moreover, the undigested food supplies nourishment to the harmful bacteria in the colon, which overtime might lead to overgrowth of harmful bacteria in the gut.
Digestion could be improved by consuming fruits with bromelain. Bromelain aids digestion of protein. Carotenoid rich fruits and vegetables support development of epithelial cells in the gut. The mature epithelial cells strengthen the membrane lining the intestinal tract. The antioxidant defense system of the gut could be improved with vitamin C and E rich foods.
Stress is also harmful for the digestive system. Learn stress management techniques to overcome stress and improve the health of the digestive system naturally.
Always eat food prepared under hygienic condition. Undercooked or raw food increases the risk of pathogenic infections of the gut. Drink enough water. However, make sure that you are drinking clean germ-free water. Water eases bowel movement. |
