Triphala: A miraculous herbal preparation

Present days researches have shown that all the diseases that occur in our body are some or the ways are related to the digestive tract abnormalities. These researches were carried in various research centers and Universities world wide, after such claims was forwarded from Ayurveda, the age old herbal health science. Ayurvedic science had already claimed that a disease is ought to happen if there is abnormality in the basic functioning of our digestive tract. To the revelation of all it has now been accepted by whole world and even by the people of fraternity who previously demanded proof and scientific explanation for the norms laid by ayurveda.

In reality our digestive tract is a seat to extract energy from the food we eat. What so ever we eat and drink, gets converted into valuable energy that is beneficial for our body. This only happens after the participation of various organs constituting in the make up of our digestive tract. Various digestive juices, enzymes and acids acts on the food stuff we eat to make it digest, so as to derive the valuable energy from it. Even the movements of our gastrointestinal tract known as peristaltic movements are also very valuable to accomplish the task.

This is the normal working of our digestive tract. But what happens when there is some abnormality in it?

Well all the bodily processes get disturbed. This happens due to formation of a variety of toxins that as per ayurveda are known as ‘ama’ in the body. Ama can be described as a sticky mucilaginous matter that is formed due to accumulation of undigested or partially digested food in our digestive tract. This ama is responsible for causing all kinds of infections in the body. This ama formation occurs due to imbalances in the three humors of the body known as vata, pitta and kapha, which in turn makes the matter worse by vitiating all the three doshas (the three humors).

As per ayurveda, now accepted by modern sciences also, any derangement in the homeostasis of the three humors (vata, pitta and kapha) causes diseased condition in the body. As our body functions on the three basic platforms i.e. the trio (vata, pitta and kapha), any abnormality in these three or imbalance in them will certainly lead to a complete or total blunder in the homeostasis in the body’s condition causing various ailments. These imbalances can lead to following disorders in the body. These are:-

  • Indigestion
  • Flatulence
  • Constipation
  • Increased cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Blood related disturbances
  • Heart related problems
  • Decreases body immunity
  • Respiratory disorder
  • General body debility
  • Early aging
  • Liver related ailments
  • Diabetes
  • Inflammation or edema in the body
  • Dull skin and skin problems
  • Decreased vision
  • Chronic headaches

And many more…

Is there any solution to such a problem?

You will be amazed to know that there is only one answer to all these queries and it is Triphala. Triphala is a miraculous herb that is exceedingly helpful in achieving ultimate health you always dreamt of. Triphala is a powerful herbal formulation established with the backbone of the principles of ayurveda, is a drug of choice of almost all the diseases that exist on the face of this earth. Triphala is a wonder herb that is comprehensively used by ayurvedic physicians to treat various disorders. Though it is widely used as a laxative but there are certain secrets about triphala that are still unknown to this world. Triphala is not just a laxative but is a powerful body stimulant that promotes health and manages overall condition of the body. It detoxifies and cleans our body to rejuvenate all the body organs making it young and energetic.

How does triphala detoxifies the body?

To understand this concept you first have to understand certain terms

  • Saline purgative – it is the administration of the salt and salty diets. Salts have the unique power to absorb water. When this salty substance reaches in our intestines, they absorb water from surrounding tissues thereby increasing the water level in the fecal matter making them watery and appear in the form of loose stools.
  • Laxative – Laxatives are the substances that make the stool loose by penetrating in them and increase the water content in it. It makes the fecal matter soft and loose in texture. It does not make the stool watery. Some of the herbs that belongs to this category are errand, triphala etc.
  • Simple and anthracene purgative – these belong to little upper category to laxative. It is in between mild laxative and drastic purgative. Some of the examples to the herbs that falls in this category are trivitt, senna leaves etc.
  • Drastic purgative – it is severe in action causing extreme purgation thereby evacuating all the fecal matter from the gastrointestinal tract out of the body. It also increases the peristaltic movements of the body thereby evacuates all the material present in intestines. It makes the stool watery and has very drastic effect. It can cause great harm to the body by disturbing the electrolyte balance. Certain herbs that cause drastic purgation are jayaphala, snuhi, indrayan etc. These should be taken strictly under medical supervision.
  • Cholagogue purgative – this category of herbs has a great effect on our liver and intestine. It is helpful in increasing GI tract movements commonly known as peristaltic movements. The loose stool is accompanied with bile juices. Example of these are parad (mercury), kutki etc.

After having a brief idea about the laxatives and its related terms now you can easily understand the action of triphala. It works as mild laxative. It helps in softening the stool by increasing the water content in it and also by little increase in peristaltic movement in the intestine. All these movements are in such a controlled fashion that it is very beneficial for our body. More over it increases the assimilation of the food that is to be digested thereby increases the energy intake. This energy intake is extremely beneficial for the body as it help in raising the endurance and energies of the body.

Being a mild laxative it does not allow any of the debris and food matter to get struck to the intestinal walls thereby minimizing the chances and risk of bacterial invasion on the accumulated substances.

Where is Triphala obtained from?

Triphala, to the contrary to a belief is a combination of three herbs rather more precisely, three fruits (tri means three and phala means fruit). There is a well known saying that good parents have good children. Same is with the case of triphala. Triphala is composed of three most valuable herbs. These are Amalaki, Haritaki and Bhibitaki. These herbs have a well esteemed place in ayurveda. These are wonderful herbs and are very widely used in treating various diseases. All these herbs are mixed in equal proportion by weight to obtain a benediction of God known as triphala.

Amla or commonly known as Amalaki is an herb that itself is considered as one of the best health rejuvenator or the rasayana as per ayurveda. It is an herb that is one of the riches sources of vitamin C. It not only supplements the deficiencies of various mineral and vitamins but is also very much helpful in cooling our body down. It is tri-dosha suppressant and there fore is one of the most effective ways to maintain body’s equilibrium. It is known as Emblica officinale in botanical language and is commonly known as Indian gooseberry as because of its resemblance with gooseberry. It is a medium height tree that is found going wild in Indian subcontinent and various other countries with similar climatic conditions. It is blessed with the properties like heaviness, dryness and coldness that support it to work as a powerful health rejuvenator. Thought Amalaki tastes sour but it contains five types of tastes i.e. sweet, sour, pungent, bitter and astringent those are helpful in enhancing its property.

Latest researches show that the tannoids principles of the Amalaki show free radical scavenging activities i.e. property of an anti-oxidant. These researches were conducted both in vitro and in vivo studies. Two of the main compounds namely emblicanin A and emblicanin B was extracted from the freshly extracted juice from the fruit of Amalaki. These were found 37 % and 33 % respectively. On investigation, they were found to be extremely fruitful in reducing the stress and were also found good as an anti oxidant when ischemia-reperfusion (IRI) was induced in rat heart.

A study conducted by C.P. Thakur in India showed the great benefits of Amalaki in reducing cholesterol levels in a study conducted on rabbits. Further studies conducted proved that juice of Indian goose berry is very important in reducing the accumulation of fatty acids and increasing the cardiac glycogen level that is very helpful in preventing conditions like heart attack.

Another study was conducted at Institute of natural medicine in Toyama, Japan. These studies were conducted to investigate the effect of Amalaki on LDL (low density lipoprotein) oxidation and various degrees of cholesterol levels using induced low density lipoprotein oxidation and rats with high cholesterol levels in there blood. The results were in support of amla and it was found that ethyl acetate present in amla remarkably was able to reduce the TBA (thiobarbituric acid).

Another research that was conducted regarding the Amalaki action on the diabetic patient and their role in reducing the diabetic cataract showed that Amla is an effective AR inhibitor and is hence very effective in suppressing and curbing diabetes and the complications that it can cause.
