Morgellons Disease is a baffling skin disorder that often involves a number of mental symptoms as well. It is a relatively unknown disorder that is usually associated with various non-specific nerve, skin and psychiatric signs and symptoms. It is often referred to as a fiber disease by some people.

In fact, it is still being researched whether it is a mental disorder or an infectious disease. In the year 2008, more than 10 thousand people reported that they are suffering from the condition. In fact, the Center for Disease Control reported witnessing a sharp rise in the number of people suffering from this disease and started investigations to find the possible causes and links behind this condition.

People suffering from Morgellons Disease are more likely than others to develop hypothyroidism or low thyroid functioning. Skin Related Symptoms

According to various researches that have been conducted on the subject, Morgellons Disease is considered to be a multi-symptom skin condition. This means that most of the signs and symptoms of this disorder are skin related. A patient suffering from Morgellons may experience lesions that fail to heal properly and timely.

A sensation of biting or crawling from beneath the skin has also been reported in a large number of cases. Patients often complain of skin burning, itching, or feeling of things crawling below their skin. Multi-colored fibers, granules or black speck like substances start appearing on or below the surface of the skin. Some people have observed fuzz, threads or hair appearing from the lesions.

Patients often feel that have springtails, skin miles or scabies that are causing these sensations. Few people suffering from this disorder have even reported seeing insects coming in and out of their own skin. Due to this, the disorder is often known as skin crawling disease. However, the most common symptom of this disorder is the painful sensations originating from beneath the surface of the skin.

Mental Symptoms

The people suffering from Morgellons Disease have also reported experiencing a variety of mental symptoms. Some people experience short-term memory loss whereas others experience the sensation of living in a ‘fog’ like state. Attention deficit disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and Bipolar disorder have also been reported in people who have contracted Morgellons Disease.

Other Symptoms

Even though most of the signs and symptoms of Morgellons Disease are skin related, but that is not true of all symptoms associated with the disorder. Many people have reported feeling constantly tired, suffering hair loss and experiencing joint swelling. The CDC has also received reports of patients experiencing vision loss. Few other symptoms that have also been noticed include chronic fatigue, depression, problem in thinking clearly and tobacco use.
