Advice to daughter on her nineteenth birthday
If you are the perturbed mother of a teenager we know what you have been going through all these years. So, even when your daughter is nineteen, she would be exposed to even more vulnerability in the society. As a mother, you need to pre warn her in a way that is subtle, so that she is not disturbed by your incessant picking on her. Don’t nudge or bother her. You can just hang this little list of reminders on her bedroom wall or keep it simply on her desk, without a word. I bet she would appreciate that and try to live by them.
She can actually refer to this little nuggets of golden advice when you are not around and believe me she would be praising you and be thankful to you for these suggestions one day. You could start by saying that nothing good happens after 3 A.M. Ask her to take her sunglasses off when she is indoors. She should call you anytime without hesitation in case of any serious trouble, whatever it is. She should not be calling things by brands, rather call them shoes and sunglasses. You can advice her to keep her cool when she can control that. She should learn to keep her word which is very important in life and it is best if mothers can set the example. There should not be any affection that become an annoying habit. She should learn to be on time, and never late for home. She has to read the paper every day and this is also where mothers can be an example. She should learn to thanks her hosts and give out thank you cards. She should learn to do household chores and try out cooking at least three dishes without having to look at the recipe book. She should never ever drive when tired. She should not get a tattoo she cannot see and also one she can see. She should not ask for advice just for the sake of asking for it and if she does not intend to follow that. She should learn to change a tire if she learns to drive.
