Amniocentesis
This is a special test for diagnosis in which a small amount of amniotic fluid about one tablespoon is taken from the sac that is there in the uterus which surrounds the baby. This fluid contains a great number of cells from the skin of the baby and this can be examined for the changes.
The test would help to find out whether there are any abnormalities of the serious kind present in the baby. It also helps to find out whether the baby is a girl or a boy. What are the different kinds of abnormalities that can be found from the test?
This helps in diagnosing the disorders that are inherited in the baby. This also helps to count the chromosome numbers and also to find out whether the actual number is present and whether any parts of the chromosomes are missing. The chromosome test helps to determine whether there is a Down Syndrome.
This also helps to decide the maturity of the lungs of the baby. This is to be taken account of if an early Caesarian section is being considered.
The level of alpha-feto protein, AFP which is a chemical in the liver of the baby, is found out and it also helps to define the Spina-bifida which is a defect and also Anencephaly which is a condition in which the brain is incomplete or missing.
This also helps in removing the amniotic fluid that is excessive or to find out any infection in the amniotic cavity. The baby’s sex can also be determined through the process. The process of Amniocentesis also helps to determine whether it is an RH- Negative baby.
However the process of Amniocentesis cannot determine all types of abnormalities. Physical abnormalities like babies having a cleft lip or palate cannot be determined through this process.
