How to Appearance of Normal breast
June 10, 2008
Even after your child’s health care provider assures you that your baby is normal, you may find that he or she looks a bit odd. Your baby does not have the perfect body you have seen in baby books. Be patient. Most newborns have some peculiar characteristics. Fortunately they are temporary. Your baby will begin to look normal by 1 to 2 weeks of age.Normal Newborn Appearance
Newborns have many variations in normal breast appearance - from color to the shape of the head. Some of these differences are just temporary, part of the physical adjustments a baby goes through. Others, such as birthmarks, may be permanent. Understanding the normal appearance of newborns can help you know that your baby is healthy. Some of the normal variations in newborns include the following, and are explained below:
color
moulding
vernix
lanugo
milia
Cephalohematoma Appearance
This is a collection of blood on the outer surface of the skull. It is due to friction between the infant’s skull and the mother’s pelvic bones during the birth process. The lump is usually confined to one side of the head. It first appears on the second day of life and may grow larger for up to 5 days. It doesn’t resolve completely until the baby is 2 or 3 months of age.
During pregnancy, your breasts prepare for nursing by becoming larger, while your nipples and areola get darker, and may become slightly larger as well. Several days after birth, your breasts become fuller and heavier as your milk “comes in.”
Getting to know your new baby is part of a fascinating but relatively simple process called bonding. Although bonding is a natural process, it takes effort. Some ways to help make this process easier include rooming-in at the hospital with your baby and techniques such as infant massage.
Some mothers feel an immediate deep emotional bond at first sight, while others find their feelings develop more slowly, as they spend time with the baby. Babies do not “forget” parents if they are separated from them at first. Babies show a unique preference for a mother’s smell and her voice.
Normal Breast Development
This first stage of development begins at about 6 weeks of fetal development with a thickening called the mammary ridge or the milk line. By 6 months of development this extends all the way down to the groin, but then regresses. At this time, solid columns of cells form from each breast bud, with each column becoming a separate sweat gland. Each of these has its own separate duct leading to the nipple. By the final months of fetal development, these columns have become hollow, and by the time a female infant is born, a nipple and the beginnings of the milk-duct system have formed.
