If you have been bleeding between periods for quite some time, you must be getting worried. Without worrying, you can pay a visit to the GP instantly to learn more on the actual cause.

If you bleed between periods, it is common to think that these bleeding have some serious cause. This is called IMB or inters menstrual bleeding. In many cases this is a common explanation. This also depends on a plethora of factors. At times when you are not bleeding you can visit your doctor and ask him to examine you. People, who take contraceptive pills that are hormonal in nature, bleed between periods.

If you miss them or take them late bleeding would start soon and this is referred to as breakthrough bleeding. If you have any pelvic pain or a vaginal discharge that seems unusual, it could be the cause of a pelvic infection.

The locally situated genitor urinary clinic can be visited if you feel you could have an infection that is sexually transmitted. This can happen from unlimited sexual encounters with many men. For these swabs need to be taken. People with IUCD have a greater risk of bleeding between the periods.

Sometimes the abnormalities in the uterus and the cervix can cause some unusual bleeding and the doctor may arrange for a cervical smear examination or an ultrasound examination of the pelvis. In older women, the risk of having cancer is great and you may be referred by the doctor to the gynecologist. He will undergo a trans-vaginal ultrasound which is more important than conventional scanning and that is more sensitive.

The lining of the uterus will have to be examined in some cases and for that a hysteroscopy may be carried out.

So now if you are bleeding between periods, it would be wise not to neglect the condition and you can visit your GP for initial advice.
