Blisters are pockets of fluid which forms on the upper layer of the skin. It may be filled with blood, pus, serum or plasma. These look very abominable and have to be handled with caution.

Causes

Many things may be responsible for causing blisters. It may be caused due to skin injury from heat or friction. A few vital causes are burns, insect bites, constant rubbing or irritation to the skin, or rashes formed as a result of chicken pox or viral illness. Note that some cosmetics, detergents, solvents etc may also cause irritation to the skin and result in blisters. This condition is called contact dermatitis.

Symptoms

Blisters are not really painful as such unless they get ruptured and expose the underlying tender skin. Itching is a common symptom but this itching occurs on the skin immediately surrounding the affected area and not on the blisters themselves.

Curing

Never try to rupture the blisters. With time they will rupture on their own. Once that is done clean the area properly with sterilized cotton and apply antiseptic cream on it until it heals. Do not put adhesive bandage on the blisters.

Immediate attention

Though most blisters should not be disturbed, in some cases you need to take immediate action. This attention is demanded when the following conditions occur:

-Blisters formed due to exposure of the skin to harmful chemicals or due to burn
-Blisters inside your mouth
-If it pains a lot or becomes red
-If pus is oozed.

Prevention

Keep your skin clean. It has been observed that blisters generally form on moist skin, so keep your skin dry by moping with clean cloth and also change your socks frequently. Wear gloves while doing manual work like gardening, cleaning, using detergents etc. to prevent blister formation on your hands. A lubricant, like talcum powder can prevent friction between skin and apparel.
