Caffeine : Good For Skin
We all know that a cup of coffee early in the morning helps to rejuvenate us after the long lazy rest. But wait!! There’s more reason to celebrate. It has been found that caffeine is proving to be a boon in the dermatological community.
It is well known that caffeine has the ability to constrict blood vessels. It has been extensively used in products (as a topical ingredient) meant for minimizing facial flushing. Hence, caffeine can be a boon for those suffering from rosacea which is caused when the blood vessels lose the capacity to contract and remains dilated.
Caffeine also has antioxidant properties when used orally or topically. Research has also proved that caffeine is anticarcinogenic. A series of experiments on mice have shown that caffeinated green or black tea can help to prevent damage due to exposure to solar radiation and in some cases it can even repair the damage. In contrast, decaffeinated tea cannot do the same.
A study has given hints that topical caffeine can repair damage caused by ultra-violet rays and may prove to be the strongest antioxidant discovered so far. Currently, green tea polyphenols are the strongest antioxidants which we have. But caffeine may surpass these chemical in its antioxidant properties. This Study is particularly promising and once proved it may give you greater reason to enjoy your morning beverage. It may be mentioned over here, that coffee berry, which is a fruit obtained from coffee plant is proving to be the next best antioxidant, though the research is still going on.
But do not forget that every coin has two sides. There are also a few disadvantages relating to caffeine. It is a dehydrating agent, so you must have plenty of water after having tea or coffee. Hot beverages can be the cause of redness, so if your face gets flushed frequently, you may better enjoy your coffee with cold milk.
