Chemicals In Nail Polish
While we sit back, relaxed in the salon, just about to start our favorite manicure session, at the least we would think of worrying about will be chemicals and reactions. We are lucky enough that the recent generation of nail polish has made the pampering way of manicure lot safer.
Conventionally, the chief chemical ingredients in nail polish were ‘formaldehyde’, ‘toluene’, and ‘dibutyl phthalates’- and a lot of them are still used.
Problem is all those chemicals have the tendency to be allergenic.
Researches suggest the use of those chemicals can pose more serious health issues. Though it has not been proven the harmfulness of the levels of the chemicals used, but a prevailing trend in the manicure industry is to eliminate their usage.
A lot of the big companies manufacturing nail polish have changed their formulas recently for the pressure of situation.
Popular products like ‘Revlon Nail Enamels’- free of chemicals like ‘formaldehyde’, ‘toluene’, and ‘dibutyl phthalates’.
‘Sally Hansen Nail Colors’ also got reformulated to eliminate all the three chemicals.
Within the last 2 years OPI, another of the favorites used in nail salons has eliminated the three chemicals used.
This movement to eliminate harmful chemicals from nail polish is a resultant of an old campaign held by the lobby group who targeted some definite brands of nail polish that has been known to contain those three harmful chemicals.
The campaigners specified that those three elements are on ‘California’s Prop. 65 list of chemicals’, known to be causing cancer or are capable of causing reproductive toxicity.
Finally, it should be kept in mind, that even if we don’t have a negative reaction from a chemical in nail polish it could still cause environmental damage. Hence, whatever is our favorite color; we should always use the latest generation environmental friendly nail polishes.
