Cold sores generally appear as soft “pimples” on your lips. They are usually caused by a type of virus of herpes type, namely, HSV-1; which, in most cases isn’t sexually transmitted. So these spread from person to person. Once you are affected by this virus, it will stay in your body, meaning you are likely get cold sores every now and then all through your life.

But here are a few tricks to beat the cold sores:

• Try not to share stuff like toothbrushes, lip balm, or drinks with other people who may have cold sores. This will prevent the cold sores virus from entering your body. The virus which causes cold sores is spread through the mucus (in nose) and the saliva (in mouth).

• People who are affected by the virus know well that the sores can aggravate from things like too much exposure to sun, too much stress, or even from being sick. Keep yourself well covered with the suntan lotion, exercise, eat healthy, and sleep well!

If you are suffering a cold sore, here are some useful tips for keeping comfortable yourself:

• If the sores are too painful, take ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

• Sucking on ice pops and cubes eases the pain and keeps the cold sores cool.

• Acidic foods such as oranges, tomatoes, and lemonade and salty, spicy foods can cause irritation to the sores, so stay away from them.

• Never ever pick at cold sores. They may bleed or worse, become infected with germs.

Usually, cold sores are benign and after a week or two, go away on their own. But if you are getting them frequently or they’re a persisting problem, consult your medical doctor or dermatologist, they will be able to prescribe appropriate medication to ease the symptoms and shorten the time that the cold sores last.
