Constipation in Children
When a child has dry and hard stool, which is painful to pass, we consider it to be constipation. Inadequate water, fruits and vegetables, and whole grains containing fibre diet, along with a lot of milk products are the primary reason for constipation in toddlers. However, commonly the child decides to delay the latrine to avoid pain and as a result, is constipated. Developing an appetite for healthy food is essential. This can happen by giving about maximum 3 cups per day of milk. Breastfeeding over 2nd year and above, more water intake, and juice diluted with substantial amount of water, should take care of the fluid intake.
Breads made of 2 grams or above of fiber in a slice could be introduced along with cereals, which have high fibre content. Addition of fruits, oat bran or raisins with hot cereal makes a wonderful breakfast. Vegetables and fresh fruits should be preferred over juice. Baked beans can be used to make creative and delicious recipes e.g. with baked potatoes, crackers, or may be on toast or in tacos. Along this a routine is to be maintained for meals and snacks. Many wonder what snack to offer a kid who is above 2 yrs of age, which is healthy and tasty at the same time! Here’s one easy to make recipe of snack. Take an assortment of different cereals like Shreddies, Corn Bran, Rice Chex, Oat Rings, ½ cup each, to this ½ cup dried fruits like Raisins, Apricots, Pitted Prunes, Raisins, Peaches, Apples in combinations. Mix these dried fruit and cereal together. Chocolate chips could be added for a treat. With this apply proper toilet training. Constipation is a lifestyle problem and proper diet management can help your child to develop good bathroom habits and make you tension free.
