Cooking For Someone with Diabetes
Diabetic patients have to take care of themselves. Their diet has to be very carefully planned and executed as food with high sugar content can be very harmful for them. But this doesn’t mean that that their life’s over and they can’t eat normal food.
If you have someone in your family who is diabetic, then you must learn to create some good dishes which are suitable for him or her. The basic rule for cooking for a diabetic patent is that the food should have a low glycemic index. This means that the food should turn into sugar (energy) slowly. This ensures that there are no sudden highs and lows in the patient’s blood sugar.
Most people think that all types of carbohydrates are same and should be avoided by diabetics. But this is not true. They should only avoid carbohydrates which turn change into sugar quickly. Therefore, candy, cakes, white bread, cookies and sweetened drinks should be avoided.
Instead, carbohydrates which take a lot of time in digestion should be chosen. Carbohydrates which breakdown slowly, produce energy in small amounts and do not disrupt sugar levels in the body that much are recommended for diabetic patients.
Thus, food products like whole wheat pastas, breads and brown rice can be included in the diet. The ratio of natural carbohydrates like fruits and vegetables should be more than other kinds of carbohydrates. All those diabetic people with a sweet tooth can have some sugar-free desserts by sweetening their favorite puddings, cakes, pies, beverages etc. with honey instead of sugar.
The diet portions should also be monitored. The same plate and pots should be used to serve food to diabetic patients. This way, they will know how much are they eating which will prevent overeating.
Diabetic patients can lead a very normal life by taking care of themselves and making sure that their diet has enough of proteins, vitamins and minerals.
