Cosmetic surgery - why the craze?
September 15, 2008
“The only real beauty you’ll ever have is inner beauty.” However, in the recent times the outer beauty tops the priority list. People go to great extents to get rid of their small chin, wrinkled skin and even nasal humps. According to a research, the number of cosmetic surgeries that were performed in the year 2003 rose 32 percent over the previous year, the figure is somewhere close to 9 million operations. Now that’s quite a number!
Two most popular factors that have contributed powerfully to the plastic surgery boom are: the increased desire to look good and advancements in surgical techniques. It is true that the way we feel about our appearance affects directly on how we look at the world around us. Cosmetic surgery is increasingly becoming a popular option for people who desire to look and feel the best so that they can lead a normal and healthy life. It has been also noticed that such kind of surgery also leads to increased self esteem and confidence.
Another factor that has made cosmetic surgery a craze is the media. Popular glamour magazines that plaster snaps of perfect beauties across their pages, in a way, instigate the readers in going in for such surgeries. Popular makeover shows on the television openly discuss about cosmetic surgeries, and in some shows the participants have to undergo a surgery to get a complete makeover. The extensive coverage of cosmetic surgery in the media has made it a less tabboed concept.
Earlier celebrities feared to admit that they elected to have such operations. They would often deny undergoing cosmetic surgery because they feared that their fan would consider them too self indulgent. However, the trend is changing; you will see celebrities speaking to the media about their facial liposuction, neck lifts, chin augmentation and the list go on.
Undergoing a cosmetic surgery is not a decision that should be taken after watching a magazine or seeing an ad on TV. It is a big decision and requires a lot of brain wracking. The first big step is to choose your surgeon wisely. It is important to ask your doctor, family, friends and acquaintances for recommendations. If you know of anyone who has had a cosmetic surgery, then ask them for a recommendation.
Another factor that needs attention is the total cost of your cosmetic surgery. Usually insurance plans do not cover the costs for such operations, then in such a situation, you will have to pay for the expenses from your wallet. However, there are financial institutions that offers loan specifically for cosmetic surgery, but prior to making any agreement with them, research about them carefully. Make sure that the expenses of the surgery do not affect your financial life adversely.
