Craving For Food
There are times when you want to stay in shape, but cant resist the temptation of a favorite food, and eventually indulge in taking a bite from the chocolate pastry or brownie you love. Even if you restrain yourself from eating, it is impossible not to daydream about your favorite food items. Mind just races with thoughts of delicious food. Psychological studies of people have shown an association between their desired food and memory of good times. For example a middle-aged man can feel a craving for the homemade sandwich, which his mother probably used to make for him when he was a kid, and this craving can attack amidst an unfavorable situation like a crisis in job or family. Brain has a reward center and a punishment center. Dopamine, serotonin, and nor-epinephrine are neurohormones, whose release by the brain induces happy feelings.
Craving for a food, and finally eating that induces dopamine release in the brain, which creates a feeling of pleasure. The system is very much similar to that of having sex or taking drugs. Often the craving for a
dessert occurs just after having lunch or supper.
Giving in to the impulse only leads to disaster. Go for the easy craving-resistance tips instead, as suggested by “Laws of Lasting Weight Loss”. Forman along with other colleagues make their dieters go through a psychological trial.
All the 98 members who took the trial were required to answer certain queries related to their cravings for food. Next, they were made to keep Hershey’s Kisses, in transparent boxes, visible as constant source of allurement for 2 days! Those who survived the allurement were actually successful because of accepting their cravings and then deciding on not to submit to the temptation. As Forman suggests, one should practice cognitive “diffusion” by admitting the cravings instead of not paying attention to it. This has worked wonders for many fighting hard to win over temptation rather than submitting to their cravings.
