Depression during Pregnancy – Available Treatment
We used to think that pregnancy protected women from depression and anxiety. Contrary to popular mythology, pregnancy is not always a happy, glowing experience! Approximately 15 – 20 percent of pregnant women develop depression.
If a woman becomes depressed during pregnancy, she often doesn’t take good care of herself. She may believe she’s really not worth it if her self-esteem is low. She is doing the bare minimum just to get by, since she is easily fatigued and overwhelmed. Poor nutrition and inadequate weight gain often result. In a desperate attempt to feel better, she may resort to self-medicating with smoking, alcohol or drugs.
Depression in pregnancy is connected to low birth weight and babies born small for their gestational age. Severe anxiety in pregnancy is associated with constriction in the placental blood supply, heightened startle response in the newborn, and newborns harder to soothe.
Good treatment for depression and anxiety in pregnancy is imperative – for everyone’s sake. Lack of treatment or under-treatment sets her up for chronic problems, and is clearly not healthy for the growing baby. If you are not sure what you are feeling is normal, talk to a health care provider you trust.
Medication is sometimes required, and if necessary to achieve 100% mental health, that is also what’s best for the baby. However, I have found that a solid wellness plan is often all it takes to treat depression in pregnancy, as well as often preventing it. This plan involves at least 5 1/2 hours straight of night time sleep, good nutrition including an excellent Omega – 3 supplement and prenatal vitamins, counseling, and a support system with emotional and physical help.
