Do We Need Vitamins?
Why should we need to take vitamins? After all, we are getting all of ours from the well balanced diets. Isn’t it? Well, hypothetically it’s true. But since many of us have fussy or poor eating habits, and suffer allergies and medical conditions; that is not always the case. Here is some expert opinion on vitamin supplements for the general people.
Multivitamin
Most people do benefit from a general multivitamin – a supplement that provides almost 100 percent of the Daily Value required for a number of minerals and vitamins– especially the Vitamin D, which is a very essential vitamin that most people just do not get enough of. Together with a balanced diet including fruit, vegetables rich in antioxidant, lean proteins and whole grains, an MVI is quite wholesome.
Peri-menopausal women, who lose monthly blood through menstruation, must take a MVI coupled with Iron.
Calcium with Vitamin D
Many foods supply the calcium we need. Dairy foods, beans and broccoli, kales are among the richest. Nevertheless, additional supplements of calcium are sometimes very important for women who do not get enough from their food.
Women need between 1000-1200 mgs of calcium daily. For women who are candidates, take 1000-1200 mgs – in two separate doses because you can not absorb more than 500-600 mg at a single time. And remember, your calcium supplement should have added Vitamin D3 which helps the absorption of calcium.
Omega-3 Fish Oils
Omega-3 fish is so good for overall heart health; not to mention brain health, depression and arthritis. Firstly, aim for 2 four-ounce servings of fatty fish per week like anchovies, wild salmon, Atlantic mackerel, sardines, and pacific oysters.
Ground flaxseeds, walnuts, canola oil and omega 3 eggs are also source of Omega 3, although considerably less when compared to fish. If you don’t regularly eat omega-3 rich foods in your daily diet, you may want to consider a supplement.
