September 20, 2008

My doctor has prescribed me a steroid cream since I have eczema in my hands. A frequent split, oozing of yellow liquid and excessive pain is what happens to my eczema. It seems that the prescribed medicine is not working. Is there anything else or any other option other than this that I could try out?

Eczema is a generic term that is used for skin rash that also cause inflammation. A common form of eczema is atopic eczema which is very itchy and is caused sometime in the childhood. Many children have it when young and this disappears as the child grows with age. Generally the cause of eczema is unknown but it is contagious and it takes time to get cured. In some patients the situation can be well managed and sometimes there is a triggering of the symptoms.

In situations like sensitive and terrible “flare ups” of the skin, steroid creams are of immense benefit. But they are unable to control all the annoying features that persist. Features such as “dermatitis or contact eczema” are implied if you have eczema affecting your hands only. These features actually indicate that in your day-to-day activities, coming into contact with certain, things might affect your skin. Ordinary soaps are to be avoided and it is advised that in washing you better use an emollient agent.

Plenty of things are available these days for increasing the hydration degree and smoothness of the skin surface. The degree of hydration helps the skin from turning “dry” and makes it less susceptible to external contact agents. These can be used absolutely without restraint, quite freely and regularly since “active” chemicals are not contained in it. “Eczema”-a handy and small booklet is available in any pharmacy outlet or local surgery. It explains in great detail and very nicely about how you should handle and control everyday problems.
