Flexitarian Diet
March 6, 2009
You perhaps often try to be a vegetarian but ultimately give up your effort because you find that it is impossible to follow a diet which does not include meat. Well now it’s the time for you to follow a Flexitarian Diet recommended by Dawn Jackson Blatner, spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association in the book The Flexitarian Diet.
The Flexitarian Diet is nothing but a mostly plant based diet but it also includes minimal amount of meat. Blatner from her own experience felt that when a carnivore tries to become completely herbivore and if he/she eats meat by chance then he/she feels guilty and ultimately switch over to carnivorism again. So the flexitarian diet can certainly be a good option because it provides benefits of a vegetarian diet not excluding the non-vegetarian intakes.
Research has prove that the flexitarian diet increases the life span by increasing the chances of heart attack, cancer and diabetes. According to Blatner, flexitarians lives at least 3.6 years more than the completely no-vegetarians. With a flexitarian diet you would be able to enjoy the mouth watering dishes without any diet stress.
Flexitarian diet is not only health friendly it is eco friendly too, because produces less carbon emissions compared to a non-veg meatbased diet. To become a flexitarian add more plant and vegetables in your diet and follow certain tips provided by Dawn Jackson Blatner:
The half-half proportion:
Cut down the amount of meat at least 50% from your diet. Then compensate it with veg proteins. You can go for different types of beans like black beans, pinto beans, white beans, kidney beans, garbanzo beans and lentils.(take ¼ cup of beans for every 1 ounce of meat)
Adding more food value
You can increase the food value of your meal by adding fruits, more vegetables and whole grains.
New vegetarian recipe:
Instead of any meat based recipe try the veg-recipes which you have never tried.
Veg-meals at restaurants:
Restaurants do usually offer a great variety of veg-meals. Just opt for one of them. Surely you would enjoy the new taste. If you want you can also buy flexitarian recipes to try them at home.
So instead of picking up toothpick to get rid of that piece of meat, pick up the flexitarian or flexi-vegetarian diet. [382 words]
