Parents are often heard complaining that the children would not eat any vegetable even if they are very hungry. The instances of cancer, obesity, heart disease and others are at a rising level and there is no hope for a change. We should, in fact, teach the children why they have to eat fruits and vegetables. They should be able to select good food.

What you can do to save this situation is to have each family member who are under 13 years of age select a fruit and a vegetable and learn more about this fruit or vegetable, where it has come from, the cultural history, how to store, serve after preparation and check out on the benefits of nutrition.

After they know more about the vegetable and the fruit, they should be able to cook a meal with that vegetable or make some pudding with the fruit. In short, they should develop a connection with that fruit and gradually learn to cook a hearty meal with that vegetable. Let the kids prepare food in the kitchen and keep a close watch. At the table when the food is served they will tell the whole family what they know about this item and how much is the food useful. You can look up cookbooks or the internet and cook for them delicious dishes. This would help them have the foods based on the nutritive value as well as enjoy the food. You can serve the food in a novel way too so that the children are interested to take the food.

The children can also be encouraged to have their own kitchen garden where they can take charge of their own produce, thus getting interested in learning more about the fruits and vegetables that they would grow. The kids would soon take pride in their produce and inspire their friends to grow vegetables and eat them after cooking them in style.
