January 27, 2009
Almost all the women suffer from the problem of hypothyroidism (low thyroid) in their productive age period. It is a problem that occurs very often to them. It affects the growth of the fetus severely as the growth of thyroid hormones of the fetus, till the period of 12 weeks, depends largely upon the maternal thyroid hormone. In case of unhealthy hormonal conditions, the child is likely to suffer from low IQ level, poor fetal growth and delayed development of nervous system. As per a study made in the recent past, it is estimated that about 2.5 percent of the pregnant women suffer from this disease.
Generally the thyroid glands are found in the front side of the neck which makes the thyroid hormone that moves around the bloodstream. In the normal conditions, the pituitary gland measures the presence of thyroid hormones in the blood and sends a message to the thyroid glands. The TSH, the thyroid stimulating hormone, does the functioning of the messenger. The TSH level of the hormones conveys the right information about the quantity of hormones present in the bloodstream. The normal level of TSH should be less than 2.5 milliunits in one liter.
It is very important for a couple to know the thyroid level in the bloodstream of the mother-to-be before getting ready to get the responsibilities of the parents. It is advisable for you to not to take iron supplements, vitamins or soy products during the pregnancy period if you find the thyroid level is not normal. It will help your child to get the things right in his body.
If you find that the thyroid hormones are working properly, then you can take more hormones to help in the growth of your child. It is always necessary for you to measure the hormone level once in every two or weeks to get you updated with the level of hormone in your body. In case you are not normal, then you should start proper medication for that immediately. But if you do not want to take risk of any kind, then try to maintain the TSH level below 2.5 milliunits out of one liter.
If you are also a mother-to-be then try to maintain the guidelines given above to get the hormone level go right and ensure that your child does not have any risk in his safe arrival on this earth.
