When you see someone bleeding, try the following:-

• Stop the flow of blood. Apply direct pressure to that area where the blood is coming from.

• It is easy to stop the flow of blood from small blood vessels because they can quickly form a clot on the surface. This happens in a few minutes. After the bleeding stops cover that area with the help of a fabric-type plaster.

• If veins get cut, then the blood flows out slowly and steadily. This blood is dark in colour. Try to stop – apply gentle pressure on the wound. After the flow stops partly, cover the area with sterilized cloth ( the inner part of a laundered hanky can be used but make sure that the cloth is absolutely clean). Then put a bandage. This kind of wound is dangerous and may need stitching after the first aid.

• Arterial bleeding is very dangerous, so immediate action needs to be taken. Bright red, i.e. fresh blood squirts out with every pulsation and if this is allowed to go on unchecked, then it may lead to death in a few minutes.

• In case of the above, apply firm pressure on the area which is bleeding and continue so unless professional medical aid arrives. If you have a sterilized cloth, then use it and press it on to the wound. Incase you don’t, anything will do. If nothing is available, rely on your hand.

• Apply a bandage or a dressing. If it gets soaked with blood, press harder till it stops. Apply further dressings on top of your first one if necessary.

• Allow the wounded person to lie down with head below the body. This will stop the bleeding and at the same time maintain the continuous oxygen supply to the brain.

• This type of bleeding does not need cleaning up. The only concern should be to stop the bleeding.

This is an emergency situation and it requires proper medical treatment.
