When it comes to exercising to lose weight, most people rely on various types of cardio-vascular and aerobic exercises. But few people know the benefits of weight lifting while trying to lose weight. Many people think that weight-lifting is only for people who are trying to become build builders.

But weight training is a very effective exercise as it helps you burn more calories than in any other type of exercise. The best part of working out with weight is that it helps us in maintaining the weight loss to a much longer period.

All this happens through a simple system. Our body burns around 50 calories a day on each pound of muscle that we have. If we add about three more pounds of muscles in our body, then our body will have to burn 100 extra calories every day. Thus, by maintaining a good muscle ratio in our body, we can stay in shape and active.

In order to build muscle, we should try to work on various muscles in our body. The weight training should focus on arms, legs, thighs and stomach muscles. You can lift dumbbells to build arm and chest muscles. Various exercising machines allow you to lift weights with your calf muscles and thus, strengthen your lower body muscles.

Another added bonus of weight training is that after doing few of these exercises in a series, your heart starts to pump at a much higher rate. This gives you the benefit of cardio-vascular work without even doing any such exercises. The after-burn effect of weight training is also amazing. According to a study, a person keeps burning extra calories for 38 hours after doing half an hour of weight training.

So, here’s the deal, you shape up your body, lose the extra-fat and get a healthier heart by just performing half an hour of weight training each day. Do you still think it’s only for body builders?
