How your children can be happy givers
August 22, 2008
It is an important task for any parent to let their child be happy givers. How often have we asked our children to give away their favorite toys to the children who have none but they have ended up in throwing tantrums and screaming. Giving does not come to many children easily. It often does not come very easily to us, adults too. However, we all know what blessings can come out of giving. We should understand how the less privileged are benefited with our things. By giving our things away we honor God by way of helping the people. It is not always easy for us but if we fall into a habit of helping others and giving on to others, we get a double measure in return.
Children have to be taught the art of giving. This job is left to us, parents and we can easily without much effort instill the sense in them to give. You can be an example for them if you readily write out the check for the church without grumbling one bit. We readily offer to cook for the neighbourhood family if they have a problem, and also giveaway money to someone in need. Kids imitate their parents and they imbibe the parent’s habits. So it would be wise to set an example for them in respect to giving.
When the kid receives a toy as a gift always encourage them to give away an old one. That would reduce the clutter to a minimum. That would be a good practice to give away toys to one who does not have much. Encourage them to go out with you while you are shopping for gifts. And while you buy a gift for his friend, it could be a toy or a story book, do not buy him one. He must learn to shop for others too. Let you kid serve and let him help you while you bake a cake or prepare dinner. Let them make a card or make some craft for old Mrs. Hubbard, who lives down the lane. Help them to save from their monthly allowance in which they can save up something to give to the poor fund, to the church or to some needy children.
Teaching our child to be happy and giving will not happen fast. They would soon learn from the examples we set for them and grow up to be careful and responsible individuals.
