HPV: The Virus That Causes Warts and Cancer
February 9, 2009
As a responsible medical practitioner I always try to talk to my patients, preferably girls or women, about HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) which affects them mainly by means of sexual practices or habits. It is a severe type of infection that causes warts and cancer if not taken care at proper time.
I feel that condoms are the best possible means of protection from this type of an infection. It is very dangerous type of infection that makes you face terribly without making you feel anything in the initial stages. It can lead to genital warts, abnormal pap teats, vaginal, cervical or vulvar dysplasia (pre-cancer) or vaginal, cervical or vulvar cancer. The patients suffering from these infections do not realize anything it gets too late for them do take any preventive measures.
Different kinds of viruses can cause different kinds of problems for you. For example: Type 6 and 11 lead to genital warts and mild change on the cervix. Type 16 and 18 are mainly responsible for the majority of cases of cervical cancer. It also brings changes that are observed during the pre-cancerous changes that can be treated. There are different teats that can determine the type of infection you are suffering from.
Unlike the other kinds of cancer cases, these infections are a different in the view of the fact that you can get some treatment for them. You can possibly fight with these for a quite a few years, with no harm done. But you have to consult a doctor and go for the teats at the right point of time. Smoking increases difficulty in such cases. If you quit smoking, you may probably help yourself from getting away from the risk of cervical cancer.
A patient is required to undergo Pap test to determine an infection like this. It can detect the cellular changes that are observed during the early stages of the infection. If the eats is found to be positive, then colposcopy is the next test that the patient is required to undergo. The places which appear abnormal is biopsied to determine the kind of infection the patients has. It is painful experience for most of the patients but if your infection is identified at the early stage, you may get some chance to get some treatment.
I think you are aware of the vaccine called Gardasil that protects people from getting infected from an infection like this. It shows positive results in the treatment of HPV.
