Cigarette smoking is very harmful for a pregnant woman. The smoke she inhales is also taken by the baby inside the womb. This smoke contains various dangerous substances, including nicotine, carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, tars, resins and some cancer-causing agents.

Tobacco smoke inhaled by the mother affects the developing child inside a lot because if a woman with a baby inside her womb, smokes one pack of cigarettes a day (20 cigarettes) inhales tobacco smoke more than 11,000 times during an average pregnancy!

There are lot of complications that take place if a pregnant woman smokes cigarette. The risk of developing placental abruption increases almost 25% in moderate smokers and 65% in heavy smokers. Placenta previa occurs 25% more often in moderate smokers and 90% more often in heavy smokers.

The risk of miscarriage also increases by the smoke of cigarette. The baby can die inside the mother’s womb or after birth. The risk factor depends on the number of cigarette a woman consumes during her pregnancy. This risk is 35% more for a woman who smokes more than a pack of cigarettes a day.

There is some ‘stop smoking gums’ which are apparently supposed to be the factors that can get rid the habit of smoking off. But actually they also contain the same unhealthy component as the cigarette does. Though the specific effects of the Nicoderm® patch and Nicorette® gum on fetal development are unknown, it is as fatal to the pregnant women as the cigarette.

In direct smoking is also very dangerous for both the mother and the baby. Carboxyhemoglobin and nicotine affects through secondary smoke. Your partner should stop smoking when you are pregnant or at least not smoke around you and inside the house. This could be good way to quit cigarette for ever.

So this is evident that cigarette smoking is injurious to health of both the mother and the child.
