The first few months are very crucial for a baby. Being a new mother it might often be confusing as to when feed the baby or is the baby getting enough? First thing first, your baby knows pretty well when and how much it is going to take. Yes, trust your baby’s instincts and your own intuition while feeding your baby. Most of the infants naturally establish regularity in their feeding demands.

The times between meals can vary in different babies. There are two reasons for this. Primarily, how much milk is stored in mother? More storage means more milk at a given time, so, the baby has longer intervals between feeds. When the mother cannot store much, the baby might need frequent meals. Secondly, all babies don’t feed fully; they might fall asleep halfway, or have a colic problem, or are restless. If these were the cases then the baby will need more feeds per day. All babies cry for milk, but it should be taken care of as soon as possible.

So, your primary concern should be to remain at the beck and call of the baby. Be prepared, so that whenever your baby demands feed he can get it. Forcing the baby to have more should be avoided at any cost, this leads to a general disinterest in food and create feeding problems in later part of life. For new mothers, it is important to remember that, for the first three months a baby cries for genuine reasons, primarily due to hunger or other discomforts.

If your baby is gaining weight and is happy, then probably he is getting adequate feed. If your baby has no health ailment like colic problems but cries all the time, together with poor weight gain, then probably he is hungry. He will pass less urine or stool than usual and the color of the urine will be dark if he is hungry. Keeping these things in your mind, you can definitely judge for yourself if your baby is hungry and act accordingly.
