Kids’ Elocution and Speech Competitions in School
Every mother would love to see her child giving an impressive speech in front of a big gathering of people. As most of the schools organize speech and elocution competitions, kids can participate in them and hone their skills. While some children have an inherent confidence while they address an audience and give a speech, some suffer from nervousness and stage fear.
That’s why proper preparation and planning are required to enhance the confidence level of these children so that they can perform better while delivering a speech.
In case of competitions where the participant has to give an extempore speech, the subject is not given earlier. In most cases, the child gets two to three minutes to organize his/her thoughts on the topic and decide the matter that he/she is going to speak. However, in some other speech competitions, the kids can choose the topic of their choice and come prepared to give the speech. It may sometimes become a cumbersome job to think and decide on an interesting speech topic as hundreds and thousands of topics are there that can be talked about.
While choosing a speech topic, it is essential to keep the audience in mind to whom the speech will be delivered. Unless the participant can captivate the audience by his/her selection of topic or woo them with their words, they will not show any interest in what the child is talking about.
Speech topics can be divided broadly into categories namely persuasive speech topics, informative speech topics, demonstrative speech topics and funny speech topics. One can also choose a topic related to recent news and affairs. As most people know about current news and affairs, they will be interested to pay attention to the child’s speech. Including humor in the speeches is another technique that delights the audience a lot. Along with the topic of a speech, some other factors like the diction, the body language, the facial expressions and the tone are also important.
