Know all About the Nutrition Facts of Pineapple
Eating fruits is one of the most effective ways of staying healthy. This is something that is well known and widely accepted across the world. The age-old adage ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ is an example of the acknowledgement of the health benefits of consuming fruits as part of one’s regular diet. Well, it’s not just apples that are beneficial to human health. For instance, the pineapple is another fruit, which is quite beneficial from the nutrition aspect.
The pineapple (scientific name ananas comosus) belongs to the Bromeliceae family. It is a rich source of the enzyme bromelain, which has been proved to be an important and highly advantageous nutritional enzyme.
Bromelain is a kind of natural cocktail or mixture of enzymes that help in reducing swelling and lessening of inflammation. The chemical mechanism of this reduction in inflammation is by the inhibition of kinins that show their presence during inflammation. This anti-inflammatory action of bromelain has been well observed as well as documented by medical science. This is especially so during the incidence of inflammation as caused by sinusitis, gout, sore throat etc. Patients recovering from surgery and injuries would be well advised to consume pineapple as the bromelain it contains help in quick recovery.
It is best to consume pineapple by itself, and between meals. Having pineapple during meals reduces the potency and effect of the bromelain as it gets mixed up and diluted with food and is used up in the process of food digestion.
Pineapple is well known as the richest source of manganese among all fruits. Manganese is important as a cofactor in enzyme action and antioxidant processes in the body. In addition, pineapples are fully fat free and also low in sodium.
Pineapples are a rich source of vital nutrients like vitamin B1, B6 and copper. Vitamin B1 is essential for better blood circulation and also important for carbohydrate digestion. Hence, including pineapples in your diet are a great idea – nutrition-wise.
