Christmas is the time for lots of cakes, cookies and desserts. But are you tensed about the extra amount of fat which these lavish dishes may add to your body? Do not panic. You can indulge on such goodies without adding pounds. Here we give you a few handy tips which can help you to enjoy your festive food without compromising on your health.

A few substitutions of the usual calorie rich foods are given below. These are tasty and healthy at the same time.

-While baking, use low fat spread instead of butter. Buttermilk or yogurt goes well with baked food. They are low in calories and fat. You can also use half butter and half spread if you don’t want to sacrifice that taste of butter completely.

-A typical Russian soured cream called smatana can be used on baked products and can also be added to sauces while cooking them. They are healthier than the traditional soured cream though may not be as good as yogurt.

-Cream sauces are not good for health. You can substitute them by vegetable puree like that of onion and red pepper. Chicken, vegetable or beef stocks will add to the taste and consistency of the sauces. Also, these are healthy.

-Instead of using loads of brandy butter and cream, you can make fruit coulis to go with the pudding. Just simmer fresh berries, churn in a processor and strain by means of a sieve. Coulis provide a rich color to the dessert.

-Instead of sugar you can always go for sweet fruits, vegetables or even fruit juices to add sweetness to your dish. Sweet potato, apple sauce or mashed banana may serve your purpose.

-Cottage cheese is a healthy and tasty low fat food that can be cooked or eaten fresh

-A special German curd cheese called Quark can be used in baking.

-Appetizer may not necessarily include chips and cookies. You can revolutionize your style by presenting bits of colorful fruits like dates, pineapples, apricots, peaches etc together to nibble before the main course. These exotic dried fruits are rich in iron.

-Poach apples and pears in wine or liquor to make a sumptuous dessert without indulging in butter or cream. Garnish it with fresh blackberries.
