Migraine: An Overview
Migraine can be termed as the worst form of headache. It is however a biological [often a genetic] disorder. People having this disease suffer from burning headache on a side of the head. Sometimes queasiness accompanies the headache. Migraine generally makes its patients sensitive to light or sound.
Migraine is not a rare type of disease. A person is more likely to have migraine than diabetes or asthma. 28 million people of American population are patients of migraine.
If not treated properly migraine can reduce its patients’ span of life. Migraine, in fact, minimizes the working ability of its sufferers. 51% of migraine patients are capable of working half of their actual ability during the attack. 66% patients even face problems while doing household jobs. Among its patients 39% people need to take bed rest more than one day.
The severe pain of migraine generally stays from 4 to 72 hours. The symptoms and pain however vary from person to person.
The latest study on migraine is The American Migraine Study II. Strategic Insights carried out the research for National Headache Foundation. It was published on 22February, 2000 at the 13th Annual Conference of the Diamond Headache Clinic Research and Education Foundation in Palm Springs, CA. This study is the modernised version of the researches of 1989 and 1999. In the previous years also the study was done by the same group of researchers.
The study counts the frequency of migraine attack and how it breaks the flow of everyday life. According to this study even improved medicines can not relieve its patients from the useless severe pain. Sometimes migraine is misunderstood as a sinus disorder. So it is mistreated. As a result patients suffer more. At least 80% of migraine patients suffer from unbearable pain while 23% of them require intensive treatment.
