Miscarriages Are Common
December 11, 2008
In about 1 in every 8 pregnancies, there is a chance of a miscarriage. Miscarriages mainly occur when the pregnancy does not develop properly, or due to abnormal chromosomes, or other involuntary factors. Miscarriages do not occur due to any mistake of the parents and it does not affect the next pregnancy.
The symptoms of a miscarriage include heavy bleeding, continuos cramps, passing of solid appearing tissue etc. but after going through these ordeals, the patient feels better. It takes sometime for the bleeding to stop ranging from days to a couple of weeks. In case you think you may have had a miscarriage, immediately consult the doctor or the midwife and make sure that the process is complete. In case you are Rh negative, you will need Rhogam to prevent the formation of antibodies against the foetal blood cells which may affect the future pregnancies.
Diagnosis of miscarriages can be done even before the pregnancy is expelled. This is called missed or incomplete abortion. In medical terms any pregnancy loss is termed as abortion. In case the miscarriage has not yet been complete, it can be treated in the following ways :-
•Dilation and cutterage (D&C) is the traditional treatment. The embryo and placenta is removed from the uterus using a suction tube with the mother under the influence oa sedative involving a surgical procedure. This method is quick and you need not worry about when the cramps and bleeding will start, but it involves the risk of anasthesia and surgery and is more costly.
•Medicines like Misoprostol (Cytotec) cause uterine contraction and hastens the expulsion. It can be taken orally or vaginally and depends on your doctor as to which protocol he may prefer. The pregnancy will pass in a few days. This option is liked by many because it takes care of your privacy and saves you the hassle of coming to the hospital regularly. But the disadvantage is that you don’t know when the pregnancy will pass. Sometimes the miscarriage is not complete and the bleeding becomes prolonged and heavy leading to the inevitability of a D&C.
•Some miscarriages pass automatically with time. It is the most natural approach but has the immense risk of infection and severe bleeding if the uterus is unable to empty out.
