Moisture is the key element for healthy hair. Most people, who complain that their hair is lifeless and dry; generally lack the moisture required for hair.

Old myths:

According to certain generation old myths hot oil and cholesterol treatments or regular brushing of hair for 100 times are necessary to restore moisturizer in hair. These myths are not altogether wrong. But they are effective only on the normal hair which has not undergone any chemical treatments like perming or straightening.

Cuticle makes the difference:

The badness or goodness of hair depends on the cuticle structure. The compactness of the cuticle layers ensures a smooth and shiny hair. On the other hand hair becomes rough and dull when the cuticles layers are lifted.

Porosity: moisture absorbing agent:

Porosity makes hair capable of soaking up the moisture. Porosity may be compared to the holes in sponge. A torn and old sponge would not soak liquid like a new sponge. Similarly damaged hair also will fail to absorb optimum amount of moisture because of poor porosity.

Optimum amount of moisture:

Hair must have 8% moisturizer along with a balanced proportion protein and natural oil. Generally sebum gland generates sufficient natural oil. But there is a deficiency of moisture. Moreover chemical styles, blow-dry etc steal at least 2% of moisture from hair.

Care:

Specially created shampoos and conditioner for damaged and dull hair can help you to get back the lost moisture. Deep conditioning recovers cuticles and hair porosity. Do not use alcohol based hair products like hairsprays, mousse or gel if you are worried about your hair’s health.

If your hair is curly or chemically treated or damaged you should provide your hair with extra care and nourishments. Sun rays can do further damage to your hair. So ensure your hair UV protection whenever you go out in the sun.
